He is still young in his career,
He’s 31 and had TJ twice. He’s not going to be pitching at a high level much longer. The elbow will go again.
He's a great player but it’s lame how the league has changed rules just to benefit him. It’d be like the NBA allowing teams to reset the shot clock and inbound the ball rather than shoot FT to get around hack a Shaq.

He's the best hitter in baseball and a top 5 pitcher. It's insane

Don’t think it’s that severe, but the universal DH (came after he started his career, but was going to happen anyway) and allowing him to stay in the game as a DH after leaving the mound has definitely provided him opportunities that Ruth specifically didn’t have.

Pete Rose is rolling over in his grave (or Urn) with how Ohtani is so celebrated by the media. He got caught and MLB covered it up.

Ohtani is truly a unicorn, because he's essentially 2 players in one. as such, it's hard to comp him against other baseball players and near impossible to comp against athletes of other sports.
he's nowhere close to being the greatest pitcher, or the greatest hitter, of all time. he isn't even the best hitter of his era (I'd give the nod to Judge)
however, he's the only guy in about a century that does both, and he is near elite at both.
because of his skillset, he's likely the most valuable and most talented baseball player of all time.

A few posts above you show the great bambino had better numbers than him in hitting and on the mound. So no he isn’t all time

He is arguably the best pure baseball players since Babe Ruth. Name another player in the last 100 years that was near the top of both pitchcing and HRs.

With all due respect, you need to get thee to a baseball encyclopedia. Babe Ruth was career .342 with 714 hitting & 94-46 2.28 with 107 CGs pitching.
Ohtani is is impressive versus thoroughbreds with private chefs, full time coaches & scouts and computer technology to refine the hitter’s and pitchers full time compulsions to improve their games by 1% or 2%.
I understand and admit that Ruth could only face his contemporaneous batters and pitchers and that Ohtani himself (personally in his training & development) derives the benefits from modern training and the game being much more advanced and specialized. I’m arguing that it is more difficult for Ohtani to even be compared to Ruth as it is more difficult to be marginally better today than it would have been to be similarly better a century ago.

No it hasn’t. There’s no reason why a DH couldn’t be a pitcher. It’s basically playing with NL rules. It the pitcher was still batting pre DH, Ohtani wouod just play 1st base or the OF when he came off the mound

He's the greatest baseball player of all time.

He’s good enough to bet on baseball and have the MLB sweep it under the rug rather than have to give him a lifetime ban.

Babe Ruth didn’t hit and pitch at an elite level at the same time. He was an elite pitcher early in his career and elite hitter later in the career. Ohtani is doing both at the same time. And he can steal 50 bases a season if he wanted to.

This goes on the More Sports Board FYI OP for future reference. Folks get their panties in a twist around here when topics aren't posted in the correct forum. I'm sure a mod will move it over there sooner or later.
To your question, so far he seems like the best/most versatile player I've seen in my 42 yrs. GOAT.....like others have said, we've got to see his full career. But his hype is absolutely warranted. He's fricking impressive.

Dollars to donuts, Ohtani doesn’t go to the Dodgers without the universal DH. They literally changed the rule to allow him to DH for himself and for the team to not lose the DH when he leaves the game. And by virtue of the DH rule he gets to hit without playing the field.

He is the GOAT, probably comparable to LeBron, although there is probably a much better argument for him than there is for LeBron.
And I say this as somebody who isn’t a fan of his since he went to the dodgers

Ruth only pitched early in his career, he stopped pitching when he was traded to the Yankees. The iteration of babe Ruth that everyone is familiar with was a position player.

Same with Ohtani. He last pitched regularly in '23, but only has three pitching decisions since then. Not coincidentally, that marked the beginning of his three MVPs seasons hitting.
Posted on 4/11/26 at 2:01 pm to Hondo Blacksheep
Ohtani has pitched his entire career unless he was coming back from an injury that prevented him from pitching. He had a sub 3 era and hit 55 homes runs in 2025.
And he currently has the longest innings pitched streak without allowing an earned run and also at the same time he’s got the longest getting on base streak as a batter in the league.
