Ours goes by seniority. We have five people in our department and I've been there the longest(15 years). There's actually only two other people in the entire company who've been there longer. One just hit 40 years and the other is 19 years, I believe.

usually try to put my vacation in early so everyone can work around mine.

I tell my boss when I won't be there; however, I know not to do that when we have important things on the calendar already. Generally, I schedule vacations at least 6 months in advance when the calendar is empty, so if he wants to schedule something when I'm scheduled to be off, that's on him.

This.

There is no set days for PTO. It pissed off the old timers who accumulated accelerated hours. According to HR, now everyone gets any time off they need. Today's work ethic is a fricking joke.

It's not shift work you moron.

The lead engineer should be given management control over subordinates who can provide backup. If not, that is on management.

I have 80 hours vacation time. Boss forces people to take my place if nobody volunteers to work.

You say they are supposed to be professionals, yet you treat them as non professionals. Retail and fast food is the only time I've ever seen employees having to ensure coverage for their own vacation.

You must ensure coverage. Not them

I have 160 hours of vacation a year. As long as I give 2 weeks notice, my boss has to find coverage. However, my department is pretty independent in that we usually find our own coverage.

Staffing is a function of management.

Employees submit time off requests and supervisors approve the requests. I’ve never denied a time off request from my employees and never had a request denied by my supervisor.
