First of all, Good Luck. Secondly, the Rotary House is very convenient to MD Anderson. They are usually full. Check for availability as soon as possible. The Marriott provides shuttle service as mentioned. Their food is pretty good.

I know at the Mayo Clinic here in Jacksonville there are condos that can be rented also hotels near the hospital. Those that can afford go this route.
I would not be surprised if there is a program at Mayo to help families while going through chemo with living arrangements.

The hospital has people who help you find housing but there are programs in the area that help. Joeshouse.org has a lot of options to look at but MDA can help as well.

ETA that Joeshouse.org has options for more than just MDA but we have used it for Houston specifically. It’s very helpful.

I think it would be Baton Rouge.

Just be aware that traveling is rough when going through chemo. There are times my mom isn’t even sure she can ride in the car relatively short distances. Can’t imagine what an extended road trip would be like.

Yes that’s why I’m thinking she’d have to temporarily relocate.

It’s looking like insurance will NOT cover housing expenses so we may need to look further into it. We are on the west side from Baton Rouge so while it’s not super convenient it may work for her to stay with us.

Back when I went there they had a hotel connected to the hospital.
I am sure it is bigger than it was 20 or more years ago.

I had impatient treatment.
Stayed in Houston when not in the hospital to see PA’s to adjust my meds and do blood almost daily M-F.
I had a cancer policy which gave me enough cash to buy a condo in the Belaire area.
Sold it for more money when my treatment was done at MD Anderson.

Some people stay at the apartments closer to Reliant stadium which some have buses to go to the medical center.

Some people just go and do their treatments at home. Just go back for appointments.

Some do their treatments there and go home to be monitored at the house.

If you need financial assistance from the charities for an apartments, you use to be off Holly hall you have to get on the list early.

They do have companies that rent apartments furnished. Just going to cost more.

Most of the cancer treatment centers have an arrangement with a local hotel for patients who have to travel far treatment.

Thanks everyone—looks like we’re going to MD Anderson next week. Fortunately it’s only for a few days so we can swing the hotel.

My mom stayed at extended stay hotels designed for cancer patients near the hospitals or at Ronald McDonald houses if they were available. The long term cancer treatment Ronald McDonald houses were pretty decent, the short term sides are sketchy from my experience. Insurance and grants covered most of it and we did fundraisers to cover some expenses.

There really aren’t sweetheart deals. You pay for the convenience. Maybe you can stay on points?

Join the hotels’ frequent guest plan before you book. Been there done that. Not real enjoyable and tiring.

Some cities have nonprofits that assist families with cheap housing while a member of their family is hospitalized.

Depending on what treatment you may not need travel. Most centers can send the script to your local cancer center for infusion administration. MD Anderson treatment only administered locally.

Maybe a patient advocate at the hospital could answer that question. Being serious not sarcastic (this is the OT so I felt I should specify)

I think most larger hospitals have social workers and financial assistance staffers on the payroll. I'm almost positive a cancer treatment center will have someone to help guide you.

I remember being asked a battery of non-cancer related questions before treatment started. I didn't have any need for lodging because I camped out at a good friend's house near the hospital for a month and a half. (It was an immense help.)
