How does Hulu work?

I've seen several posts today that suggest that it's owned by multiple media conglomerates unlike Netflix which operates on its own. Is it in fact divided up by different companies and used as a communal place for them to distribute content?
ETA: And has it always been like this?

Sounds like you know how it works.
I don't know the percentage breakdown but that's how it is.

You pay $6 and there's ads. Pay a few dollars more, and there isn't any.
Don't like it? Use Kodi.

You're not kidding. It's fricking terrible. And it won't auto play like Netflix.

Agreed. Its search function is also terrible. I tried to find Chapelle's Show and it wouldn't show up even tho I know it's on their service. Ended up saying frick it and watched it on the Comedy Central App.

It's a shame always sunny left Netflix. Now I have to watch it on Hulu.

They fill their lists with awful straight to digital movies and shows you never want to watch. They stay in business thanks to Comedy Central

They also have a streaming live service

It's one 45second ad in the same places an ad would be during a regular show. Technically you could look at it as you're paying to not see ads since it's a lot fewer. I just pay the few bucks extra for 0 ads.

Well it depends. Do you have a smart TV? Roku? Firestick?
Either way, you turn the damn thing on, go to Hulu, fork over money, and browse hundreds of TV shows and still remark about how there is nothing good on TV.

What? Maybe on older shows, but on newer content, there are 90-120 second ad breaks in the show. Usually 5 times per ~24m episode.

That's about to take a huge hit when ISPs make it damn near impossible to watch.
