If there is a metal painted door frame around the door, swipe your index finger and middle fingers over it for about 2 to 3 inches. It will discharge the static electricity.

I used to have a pair of shoes that would build it up like crazy on the carpeted floors in our main office building and I was constantly getting shocked. Once I started swiping my fingers on the door frames, I quit getting shocked every time when it get cold.

The same applies for getting in and out of your vehicle. Just rest your hand on the door or part of the door jamb when getting in and out and it will prevent you from getting shocked.
