I try and go at off peak times so that I can do super sets with 3-4 exercises so that I don't have a ton of standing around time. If I have to wait I just work in some push ups or sit ups to keep moving.
Even at off peak times there always seems to be a person using the equipment to create new exercises when they could be using machines designed specifically for what they are trying to train. The gym that I go to has one machine for assisted pull ups and dips (your knees rest on the pad) so I have to wait as the women seem to be drawn to it like moths to a flame even though there is a clear sign on it showing it's intended use and there are 10 leg machines next to it.
