Help me understand the extortional toll levied for using the Causeway over Lake Pontchartrain going southbound. That bridge has been paid for for decades beyond memory. In the hands of LA politicians tolls are a form of sanitized (barely) theft.

They were able to add toll to SH 121, because the service roads are essentially the original form of SH 121. Technically Sam Rayburn is not SH 121. TxDOT had no money at the time to add mainlanes to 121, so NTTA entered in. Technically it was awarded to a foreign firm, but NTTA said WTF and got it back.

I watched them build a toll on 114 right in front of my office this year, 100% at minimum that will happen.
Especially since they will have to elevate it at some point. The DNT expansion into Prosper starts sometime next year.
edit: That explains why 121 all of sudden turns into a toll. LOL I always thought that was the oddest thing.

I agree they can add toll lanes to 380, they cannot remove free lanes and toll them though.
The 380 stretch between McKinney and Denton has to be the most piss poor planning ever though. Went camping at Possum Kingdom last week. Half the commute time was on that stretch in traffic and construction.

I don't think city planners expected the population explosion.
Think about this for a second. You can technically be on a toll road from Prosper TX to UPTOWN.

I think toll roads are great if the money goes to upgrading the highway system. The problem is, it will eventually become politicized, and you'll be stuck with a situation like you have in New York. Basically, the toll system in New York only exists to pay the salaries of the people who collect the toll. That' it. Virtually none of the money actually goes to the city. You're just paying a guy to lift a gate so you can cross a bridge.

As an alternative means of transport, they are great. Allows the people who want to use them the ability to use them, also, the projected income allows for bonding out the project much faster than having to allocate general fund revenue.

Didn't they take the free HOV lanes on 635 from 75 to la Prada and make them tolled now?

It is the longest bridge in the World (24 miles). It probably has some pretty significant maintenance costs associated with it.

1) They only charge tolls one way. So it's actually $2.50 each way... just over 10 cents a mile. Peak times in Houston toll roads are higher than that.
2) Tolls were $3 because they never have actually paid off all the bonds - major improvements were done with borrowed money. It recently went up to $5 because they are about to do more improvements.

Tell that to NJ and NY. They put tolls on US Interstates and US Highways decades ago.
