You my friend, have the right idea.
I have been a server at different times of my life. I've waited tables, done the take out gig, and delivered at different places so I tend to think of the workers as human beings and not as a variable in some subjective equation relating their tip to my happiness at saving a buck.

Vincent's is the most recent culprit. Fausto's on Vets will also charge you for a to go box. You get charged by the size. Pay $80 for dinner and get nickel and fricking dimed on the way out. Got kicked out of there for the same reason as Vincent's

I always leave a few dollars, but then again I'm not poor like most of the broke dick losers on this board.

There shouldn't be an extra charge for the owner to coup. The workers should be getting a tip. But, I get the owners stance here. It is more expensive to process a to go order and margins on food are tenuous. They make their money on booze, wine, tea and soft drinks. Drinks are slim on a take out compared to a sit in customer.

So who am I leaving a dollar to? First you said it was to pay for the plates and napkins and then it's for the staff. I'm confused where my money is going in this transaction.

The person making 2.25 an hour who got your container and bagged it.

Want to watch a restaurant owner's head explode? Pay for your to-go order with a coupon or a groupon certificate.

Cool. As long as I know where it's going. Y'all split that with the bus boys and dishwashers right?

9/10 coupons say dine-in only

I tip well. If you're getting less than 20%, you really did something stupid. I usually give a buck or two, depending on the place. But it's gotten ridiculous. I wish restaurants just paid their employees a decent wage, and Americans got past this absurd amount of expected tipping. We're probably the only country that has this absurd system.
Besides, people that won't go out to eat because of the 15-20% price mark up, ate the people that are stiffing the servers.

I usually tip like $1.50 but that's because I'm a weak person.

I'm all for no tipping and paying them a livable wage. Raise prices, no tips.

I've never worked in the service industry. But, I want to have a place one day.

The restaurant owner should pay their employee ringing up the to-go orders a higher hourly wage- bottom line. I know he/she may not do it every night, but have a system in place to track it.
