Our business is nearly all word of mouth and referrals. We do networking events from time to time but only where current customers are present so we can get an endorsement on the spot.

Radio. Best way to advertise. At least that's what I hear on the radio.

I’ll be honest and I see it’s not a popular answer at all but radio helped me a ton, although it took a few months. Having a website is obvious. I have a well known local radio host and it was $2.50 for each 15 second ad.

Basically he'd just mention a few things about my business. For my regular 30 second ad it’s on a different channel but same radio company and it’s like $7.99 an ad. I spend only like $100 a month and they run minimum of 3 of my 30 second ads in a day. So yea there are days they don’t run of course, or only my 15 second thing will run.

Social media. You must have a consistent brand message that provides meaningful content. And when you post, you must do so strategically and not continually. Otherwise, your message becomes diluted. You have to engage your customers.

In your line of work, this may be difficult, but have to figure out a way to be “follow-worthy."

As part of your plan, think about why customers would want to engage with you on social media. Look at your business from the perspective of an outside observer and ask yourself, “Is what we say and produce worthy of being followed? Is it something that will draw people back again? What’s in it for them? Would I follow us?”

You'll also need to figure out a way to "shake things up." Try to leverage the “social” aspect of social media to create online events that get followers excited. Don’t think of it as a marketing “campaign” but rather as a series of experiments with your followers. Surveys, polls, quizzes, product giveaways and crowdsourcing (of photos, videos, etc.) are examples.

And lastly, you have to get your most satisfied customers to become your biggest fans and have them help you get your message out.

Good luck.

Nope, I used to pay $250 a month and now $100. 15 second ad is $2.50 an ad, 30 second is $7.99 an ad

Did they send you an abc report?

Or give you a CPM number?

1. Twitter. Create a twitter account for your tree service and start following people who live within that area. You will eventually gain followers and you have to tweet a few times a day so that people will have your company in mind.

2. Running an ad in the local newspaper would be a good idea.

3. Create a website. You can keep it simple, use blogger.. Just to have something that will come up when people google "gainesville tree service".

4. The signs on your trucks is a no brainer. And when you are at a job, make sure you park where it is visible where there is the most traffic. When you go to the store or anywhere. Park where your vehicle will be visible to oncoming traffic. The more people see your sign in different places the more familiar they will become with your service.

5. What about running an ad on local sports AM station?

I have no idea what either of those things are

ETA: I've been using radio for 8 years so maybe they gave me what you are talking about back then. I don't remember, I've slept since then.

Send out postcards to previous customers. (People you did work for a year ago or more.)

When on a job, put a sign by the road with bidness name and contact info. Maybe have a clear box attach so people can grab a flier. (Include a time sensitive offer while you're in the neighborhood.)

The station must be tiny with less than a thousand listeners at any given time. Not saying that’s worthless, it clearly has value to your business. But putting those numbers out there without context is going to give people the wrong impression about the affordability of radio advertising.

ABC and CPM calculations speak to that context in an industry standard way.

Twitter is worthless for his business. His customers are middle class to upper class people in late 30s and older who don’t use Twitter.

Well yeah, it depends on the area of course. I just figured in OP if he decided to go that route he would probably check prices regardless.
