I’ve come across quite a few morons through the years who think the lower you set the thermostat the colder the air is coming out of the vents

Vehicles ACs do basically work that way and pretty much everyone has operated a vehicle AC. So I give them a pass for not realizing that most residential units don’t really work like that.

My wife and my 10 year old kid both believe this to be the case.

The house is warm, let’s say 78, but the a/c is running and set on 70 so they bury the thermostat to 65 as if that is going to change anything. The unit/s are already cooling at their capacity.
Idunno. My experience is as the ambient temperature of air going into the return air vent falls from say 80° to 68° the air coming out of the vent goes down a few degrees.

One day I’ll need to get a thermal heat gun and catalogue the drop over time and ambient intake air.

But I’ve got other things to do most of the time.

EDT: well, I guess I’m a boomer. Turns out there are some really high end units that actually do this. I’m talking about a regular HVAC unit that 99% of people have in their houses.

Well, that’s true maybe 1-2 degrees. But that’s going to happen regardless of what your thermostat is set at (as long as the unit is still running). For example if the thermostat is set at 68 or 56 that’s going to happen.

My point is, unless you have a sophisticated much higher end unit, the thermostat temperature setting is not making the unit produce colder air. It’s either producing cold air when on and running or not when it’s off.

So the wife is right?

It blows colder if you set it lower. Dammit!
