How do people fall asleep while driving?

I don't understand how somebody lets this happen.
I have had to pull over before to rest or make myself more alert, but in all my years I have never come close to actually falling asleep.
Falling asleep is far more dangerous and inexcusable than regular drunk driving but we as a society don't tend to shame drivers that fall asleep as much.

Night job
I remember about 5 times while working a night job (11pm-7am) and driving on the interstate to drop something off. I felt like I passed out for 20 seconds, opened my eyes, and wondered how the hell I was still alive
That was a scary arse feeling

When I'm working dogs, that first night is always the roughest one.

I work 13 hour shifts 530 pm to 630 am.
I have about a 30 minute commute home in a low traffic area. Multiple times I have caught myself nodding off and literally having to slap myself to stay awake. Other forms are rolling down Windows no matter the temp and jamming so heavy tunes.
But I can easily see how people do it.

I used to fight it all the time when I worked my college summer job. I was working very long hours, getting home at midnight and then getting up at 4 am to deliver building materials all over the state.
Several times I found myself drifting, which is horrifying now looking back at it, but it was part of the job and we were encouraged to work long hours.
Chewing gum was always my go-to.

I usually roll down the window, turn the music up, and start headbanging. Always wakes me up.

A long time ago I was having this dream that I was driving and I woke up and I was driving. Scared the shite out of me. Now I never drive tired.
Back then after this I used to rest at that old rest stop outside of Gonzales when I drove in from partying in NOLA>

That person in the SUV probably died thanks to that guy not getting enough sleep so he could make more money.

Back in early December, I drove 14 hours to Boca Raton, Florida. Unfortunately, I had to leave the next night because I didn't want to pay 150+ for a hotel room. So, on about 5 hours of sleep, I made the return drive and let me tell you just how brutal that drive is. Nothing but trees and road. I was about 3 hours away from LA when I had to pull over and try to nap because I was losing it. I tried to sleep for about 35 minutes until I realized I wasn't going to sleep. Most brutal 3 hours of driving I've ever done and I'll never do that drive again.

Hate to admit it, but it happens to met at least twice a month.
I've found that i'm more likely to dose off if i'm on the road between 2pm-5pm, rather than at night.
Lull of the day and being on the interstate I guess?
Either way I really need to cut it out before it ends terribly for somebody else besides myself.

You won't know it until running into something wakes you up.
