I have always had an affinity for the state of Louisiana, history and the civil war. I have family that served and one of my ancestors was even a sgt for the st James rifles and was captured at port Hudson! I know that several reanactments go on around the area but I’m just wondering if anyone here knows how to join up! Also any advice from some reanactors that might post here is welcomed!

Check out the book Confederates in the Attic if you're interested in some of the basics.

You need to change the name of your mascot. You support a racist mascot, therefore a racist team and racist school.

When everything becomes racist, then nothing is racist.

Look up 7th Louisiana re-enactors. Or Washington Artillery 5th Company. A lot of these groups do multiple time periods and switch back and forth b/n Union and Confederate for Civil War stuff. Some are strange people, but in a good way.
Have some fun.

I photograph the largest one in TX every year in Jefferson. It is really a sight to behold. Those re-enactors live the deal while they are there, living in tents with their kids, cooking on open fires in kettles. They are sticklers for details, down to stripes on uniforms. I don’t know how much they spend on pyrotechnics, but it’s a lot. There might be some info on the battle for Jefferson website.

You could get involved with your local SCV chapter... there is some overlap there, but not as much as you’d think. Just go out to a re-enactment and start talking with the guys there (just not too early, we’re mostly hungover ). Most of the guys out there are pretty cool about talking with people who show an interest. See if you can’t find a group that is somewhat local to you - there’s several in the southern part of LA - or that has some familial connection to you.

Most of the groups will have semiannual meetings where they’ll vote on you joining them, but likely you’ll get friendly with a few of the guys first and they’ll invite you to join them for an event... and just go from there.

I haven’t been active in a couple of years, but during my time I was able to learn a huge amount about the period. Most of the guys out there are fairly authentic (at least as it pertains to the uniform, weapons, tactics, and accoutrements... but at night expect the modern beer to come out ). There’s a thousand little things you can pickup on; like authentic buttons, or footwear, or history or smaller more local events, or actual history of events that won’t be in your textbooks.

It’s cool. I miss being out there from time to time, but it can be time consuming and you have to plan around the events.

Try googling "civil war reenactments" and seeing if there is any contact information.

The larger events are cool because of the numbers, but I wouldn’t advise trying to meet a group out there... because there’s so many people that only come to the bigger events and you’ll run a higher chance of falling in with the guys who have rubber soled shoes and the polyester hats.

Don’t want to drop any names, but I’m a member of the 5th Co. WA and the 16th LA. The 5th is an artillery group if you want to go that route (and can be a little more pricy in the long run); the 16th is an infantry group ... both full of great guys who are dedicated and know their shite. They’re both loosely based in the BR and NO area.

They have Facebook pages, but I can’t vouch as to if they are ever up to date.
