How difficult is tile work?

I have about 20- 12"x12" tiles that are coming up that I need to pull up and put back in place. I'm somewhat handy, I've done sheet rock, moderate plumbing, and moderate electric work over the years. Got a quote of $600 to do the work. I understand it's labor intensive to chip up the tiles and mortar but is it really worth 600 bucks! Seems pretty easy looking at YouTube.

What do you mean coming up?
Id rec hiring a couple mexicans, they will knock that out quickly

Taking up the old tile and preparing the subfloor is 75% of the work. Either get them to do it and you do the rest, or you do it all and plan on spending 3x the time you think getting old tile up.
Laying new tile is easy.

Pulling up tiles and not breaking them would be a bitch

As long as the floor is level, it's not so hard.

Go ahead and give it a whirl then. That way you will know firsthand. Then get back to us detailing how much time it took from start to finish and how much fun you had.

People are not going to the work for free. $600 seems fair for a few guys doing a days work.

Yea the quote I received was from a couple Mexicans who only take cash. Cost of labor is not cheap right now after the flood.

Simple as long as you don't have to make any cuts. Still pretty simple even with cuts if you have access to a tile saw

Its damn near impossible to chip up tiles and mortar without causing unwanted damage, especially if you don't know what you're doing. Tile work isn't easy if you've never done it. My advice, pay the $600 to get the job done by someone who knows what they're doing. You'll come out a lot cheaper that way than by trying to do it yourself and messing up, then having to pay someone to come behind you and try to fix your mistakes

The only difficult part would be chipping off the old thinset off the concrete. It's a PITA.

Don't know about floor tile, but I did the kitchen backsplash in our old house and it was a pain in the arse. I'll pay the money to have someone else do it next time.

I did flooring work for a while--ceramic included. If someone called me out for a tile replacement, I'd charge $25/ea for whole tiles and at least $50/ea for tiles that are difficult cuts.
Don't forget that after you finish your DEMO and prep and install the new tile, you have to let it cure (possibly overnight) then come back to grout it. And I'd rather do anything than grout tile.....
