I don’t know, screaming kid seems to take the joy out of drinking for me.

Just tell yourself you’re going to not drink tonight but maybe tomorrow. Then tomorrow do the same thing.

That’s pretty much what worked for me. I got tired of waking up feeling crappy (either from too much or just staying up too late drinking).

I went from a fairly heavy beer drinker to a fairly light beer drinker. I had a period of scaling back and a period of no drinking at all. It wasn’t fun but it was (for me) “simply” setting a new routine (which I didn’t really enjoy for a period).

Any new practice/hobby probably helps.

I’m sure it’s different for everyone. Don’t be scared to get professional help if you need it.

Start now though, the longer you wait the harder it will be.

It killed my dad (both figuratively and then later literally).

Good luck brother.

This helped too. Probably either makes you go one of two directions.

You’re both not even close to being alcoholics... highly-functioning or not, but if you’re still getting a hangover, you’re not even close to “having a problem“...

Are you physically or verbally abusive? Do you get behind the wheel? Do you get aggressive?

I tried and failed many times, went to rehab a couple of times and stayed sober for a few months at best. Oddly enough what finally did the trick is I had some bloodwork done and my blood sugar was high and I was given a scrip for metformin (in addition to the BP meds I was already on). I was in physical rehab a few years ago and several of the people there were recovering from amputations. Watching those sad sons of bitches wheeling around freaked me the hell out for some reason and I've been terrified of diabetes ever since.

For whatever reason that's what did it and I stopped drinking and changed my whole way of eating that afternoon when I got home. Now alcohol and medication free. Feels good, man.

I don't think it's a stretch in the slightest

Not saying you’re wrong. I don’t think I was an alcoholic but I do think I drank too much. I assume I probably would have had a much more difficult time addressing it If I waited.

I feel the same way. I'm not an alcoholic but my behavior on alcohol and how much I drank was hurting me in all areas of my life. So I'm not.

Just look at what a DWI will cost you. You then learn to either quit or drink at home.

Working from home is not for me. I used to bring my lunch and bag with workout clothes. Now I just crawl out of bed, sit at my computer, and crack open a beer by 2:00pm. I say I’ll just have two, take a nap, and go to the gym but here I am again....

Sounds like the first thing to do is get you a job where you don’t work from home.
You also need to entertain yourself. Get a new hobby or pick one up that you left off some time ago. Learn to play guitar, study Spanish, take boxing whatever your likes are.

First, you aren’t alone.

The last year drastically changed the way we work and interact with friends.

Drinking is a lot easier when you are working from home. “Sneak” drinking indicates not necessarily a habit but more of embarrassment or potential ridicule from spouse.

A 2 pm beer probably takes the edge off of work from home with kids/spouse schooling or working from home.

Many are in the same boat. As someone mentioned earlier, discuss with your spouse and put some limits on when and how many you can drink.

If that doesn’t work, seek professional help.

Once again, many are in your position right now.

Finding out I had end stage liver disease sealed the deal for me. I'll never forget that day or everything that has followed.

I started drinking more than I have ever had before during covid. At least a 5th of whiskey a week plus beer for almost the entire year. But I ended up making a rule for myself, no drinking Monday - Thursday. Working out every evening before dinner helps, but also I just don’t keep alcohol in the house during the week. Only buy enough to last me thru Friday- Sunday. I focus more on eating and hydrating during the week so I wake up more refreshed and less lethargic.
Cutting it out completely was not nessecary for my case but I found that my cutting it out during the week, I actually drink a little less on the weekends. That may be a good step to start to at least prove to yourself you can break the habit. Let it be more of a reward for weekend instead of just a daily habit. I had a few beers left over in the fridge from Sunday and I pulled the out this morning and stuck them in the pantry. I won’t put them back in the fridge til this weekend so I can focus on work, staying hydrated , excerise, good eating, and good sleep this week.

I didn’t. But I’ve never had a real legit drinking problem either, I just like to have a few to unwind or at dinner.

I asked the Lord Jesus Christ to take away the desire, and He did. It wasn't immediate, but He came through and continues to.
