Today was on my calendar as I mark it as a holiday. On this day, July 5, in 1946 French automobile engineer turned fashion designer Louis Reard unveiled the first "Bikini", named after the Pacific Atoll on which atoms were being split (another designer had designed a two-piece suit dubbed the "atom"). The war in Europe had ended and people were again feeling the freedom to express themselves and their appreciation of the good things in life. There had actually been two-piece suits before but the scandal was that the navel was exposed for the first time, and Reard wished to claim it as the smallest swimsuit ever made.

Reard could not find a legit fashion model who would wear his creation, and hired a nude dancer named Micheline Bernardini as his model. This is a photo from the actual first reveal, taken at a swimming pool in Paris. Let us remember and revere Louis Reard and Micheline Bernardini while having a beer and a leftover hot dog.
