Imagine setting sail from Hawaii in a canoe. Your target is a small island thousands of kilometers away in the middle of the Pacific Ocean — a body of water that covers more than 160 million square kilometers. For thousands of years, Polynesian navigators managed voyages like this without the help of modern navigational aids. How did they do it? Alan Tamayose and Shantell De Silva explain.

Meanwhile Columbus lands at America...."India!!!"

I don't have time to watch a video, but people should read On the Roads of the Wind, which is a great introduction to the archeological history of the Pacific. The Polynesian expansion is just an amazing story, with a very interesting subset of physiologic and anatomic adaptations.

That's not the way it happened.

OP probably gets lost if the GPS on his phone can’t tell him where he is.

The pillars of Thor Heyerdahl's career were trying to show that trade routes could've existed from Egypt to South America to Polynesia.

That's what KonTiki is about.

There are also theories that one can infer large ripple tides which they claim refract from large islands and can be seen with a trained eye.

probably more useful in island chain navigation than on open ocean but theories are theories.

They followed birds and could often times see the island they were heading towards.

If they were willing to travel the ocean in one of these, navigation was the least concern.

Are you looking to journey beyond our reef, find Maui, deliver him across the great ocean to restore the heart of Te Fiti?
