My John Deere 314 is 34 years old and has never been to a mechanic or shop. The old Kohler engine has points, coil and condenser. Has never been parked out of the weather. I did replace the seat about five years ago. I don't bother picking up limbs. If the front tire will climb it, I run over it. Have never bent a blade.

An expert. Since I'm considering buying a new ZTR what brand would you recommend?
1 acre overall no hills no trees, 60" fence opening.

if buying consumer grade mowers the toro and john deer seem to be the best quality ones.
the husqvarna being my choice because they are some of the easiest ones to work on and change belts on but the brackets on the decks have poor quality welds and almost every one has the weld crack off and need rewelding to the point that I would take a brand new one and have the welds gone over if I bought a new one.
commercial mowers are the best if you can afford them and the only choice if you have a big yard.
if you have a small yard then you simply cannot beat a snapper rear engine rider because they last forever and are virtually indestructible plus the decks are twice the thickness metal of any other lawn mower deck and the design is so basic and simple that there is nothing that isn't cheap and easy to fix

Toro with big rear wheel is $299.
Not sure you can find too many used cars for that.
If you're talking lawn tractors, then that's a different story.

Yeah how about they Deere with the general composite transmission. I changed 24 this year!
Toro ok residential zero turn. Not the best and not the worst. Kawasaki residential engine had a few in for valve issues which is not uncommon. Their toro engine nothing but nightmares.
Husqvarna I got 54 units in the shop now for the general transmissions. They went cheap on the transmission to save money and it is coming back hitting them
In the tail.
Great advice but the most expensive zero turn you can afford for 1/2 acre lot.
The. When the transmission goes explain to the customer why this unit cost more to fix than a residential and they cannot afford to fix it.

We had Toro's growing up that were fine.
A few years ago I bought one, and got ONE cut out of it before having to be repaired.
All consumer goods, appliances, etc. are built on the theory of planned obsolescence, in that they're designed to be repaired by professionals or just ditched in a little bit when they go to crap.
Sucks.

According to their website, the rear engine rider decks are only 13 gauge. The forward ground speed is only 4.5mph.

The cheapest Cub Cadet at HD has a 13 gauge deck. Is there a particular snapper model with a double thick deck?

Almost every household appliance and accessory has gone to shite. In the past you threw things out because you were sick of them. Now they break before you even learn how to use them.
We still use a 25 year old washer. Tried a newer one with a bigger drum to cut down on cycles. Kept the old since it still worked and the other one played out in a couple months.
So I put the old one back in and it's run like a top ever since.

I actually enjoy mowing.
I like to get on the mower, throw on some headphones with a podcast and tune out for a couple of hours.
Don't forget the beer.

I have the LGT-2654. I change the oil and grease it regularly. The trans. has not had any issues in 7 years. I mow one acre.
Do you see issues with my model coming through your shop?

People used to pay for mowers. Today most are financed. Same thing that has happened to cars, college education, etc.....
Posted on 7/16/17 at 7:59 pm to baobabtiger
They are being financed because the average American has $400 in the bank. Most spend every penny.
Ok, so the study was half of Americans couldn't a afford an unexpected bill of $400 but the point remains
