Was wondering if the OT could give me a history lesson.

They all roughly had the same population and all are on I-10.

What happened?

Do you think Beaumont is some kind of metropolis?

Settlers heading west got tired of the atchafalaya bridge traffic and decided that was far enough

Industry. Oil and gas developed in Beaumont for whatever reason, outside of LA.

It's been stated that the 2020 census had been skewed by Laura.

Could be a perfect day, but the moment I reach Lake Charles, I'm stuck in a rain downpour.

The route I-10 takes through the Lake Charles area doesn't do it any favors. It looks extremely depressing. Does it represent most of Lake Charles? I have no idea.

Louisiana baws packing up their wife and kids in the car, fleeing west and staking a claim after passing the welcome to Texas sign.

The north and south sides of I-10 were largely abandoned after Laura and were not good areas before.

With that being said, south lake charles, moss bluff and much of sulphur looks nothing like what I-10 depicts.

Lake Charles turned down old man Heyman when he tried to build the Oil Center there.

Lafayette boomed with oil in 50s through 90s.

Lots of very profitable service companies there. Much larger middle class.

Lake Charles is skewed on one end toward refinery workers and on the other toward high-earning professionals and big landowners. Not much in between.

Lake Charles has done a nice job rebounding. They’ve redone a lot of downtown and there is plenty of money there

That drive along the lake with the old historic homes is beautiful

Also a lot of the Barbe district has a ton of money and is considered outside of the city limits. All down country club to the lake and Big Lake road down to Gray plantation.

Very nice subdivisions not in the city limits

All those have kept Lake Charles from taking off during timeframes when it was on the cusp of possibly doing so. It’s geographically as well suited to be a big population center as anywhere in the state, but it seems oddly susceptible to getting clobbered by major hurricanes.

Lafayette is trying to turn into a mini BR….. TopGolf, Chimes, Superior Grill are all in construction currently on the same block.

For many years there were a handful of families with money that controlled what came in and what they were able to keep out. If they couldn’t get their share of it, it wasn’t welcomed.
As this control weakened over time, the city grew and new businesses came in and thrived.
