There was a man who was a young Nazi youth. After the war, he fled persecution for war crimes. He later wrote a book titled "How Was It Possible?"
I met the man and he autographed a copy for me.
Well did he give an answer, or did he just get a publishing deal to ask a question?

If you weren't a Jew or someone who stood in the way of his final solution then you didn't say or do anything to make them notice you.

He didn't.
He convinced millions to pay no attention.

How in the hell were so many people willing to help/encourage/look the other way while millions were mass murdered for no reason?
This question has perplexed me my entire life. It was just a consciousness of evil that swept through the German population at a condensed point and time in world history. Has much to do with basic human nature and mass psychology. A Cult of Personality, if you will.

Millions didn't do it. They just didn't prevent it. Hundreds of millions of Americans would support the government in genocide of a minority if it came down to it.
Why do we get stuck in the obvious fallacy of thinking that we are inherently better than some other group of Homo sapiens?

He was the best propogandist of the 20th century. He went to great lengths to perfect his voice inflection and his tone. He perfected "rah rah" public speaking and practiced it relentlessly. He went as far to study hypnotism and to take acting lessons. Hitler understood the power that well honed speech could have on a nation of proud people riding a wave of nationalism. He made himself the epicenter of the perfect storm that had been gaining strength since the end of WWI by becoming the grandmaster of the delivery of words and ideas.

It really started with world war one. The treaty of Versailles absolutely gang raped Germany, spiraled their country into debt, which caused mass inflation.
On the other hand a lot of jewish immigrants were doing quite well for themselves. They had businesses, were doctors, lawyers, etc.
No one really took Hitler seriously until around the late 20's, he was considered way too radical, but things got so bad in germany they were ready to blame anyone and do anything to get things turned around.
I honestly do not believe the vast majority of germans hated the jews. I think they just liked not being poor anymore. The vast majority of what Hitler did, the first decade or so at least was basically take money and jobs from jews and give it to germans. There were hardliners obviously. But I don't think the mass populace would have been cool with just offing 6 million jews.
But by the time they really got into place and got the war machine going what were you gonna do? If you stood up you'd be killed on the spot no questions asked.

A few people have touched on it in this thread.
It can be blamed on the Germans respect for authority. They were like robots, doing whatever they were programmed to do. Kinda like the Japanese culture at the time.

The same way George Bush invaded Iraq and if anybody spoke up against it they were labeled a traitor? YOU'RE EITHER WITH US, OR YOU'RE AGAINST US!!

I understood that:
1. "Millions" didn't, I'm sure the number that knew, especially took part in it were much much lower.
2. Jews were not well regarded by many, and most people didn't know they were being exterminated as opposed to relocated.
Not to minimize the horrific evil of the entire thing.

Roosevelt was an ally of Stalin. Is he implicated in the collectivization purges of Ukraine?

It happened over time. First they took their guns then they started taking away their culture and heritage and then they started taking away rights like free speech. Sound similar?

no. without the world war 1 we still have prussia. with prussia germany doesn't become what they became.
with no world war 1, the remaining Prussian states have no reason at all to follow Hitler. Part of the treaty of Versailles gave a good amount of prussia to poland, which gave the Prussians reasons to hate the pollacks which is why they were one of the first to be torn apart and saw some of the worst of it from the Reich
It's sad about the Jews, but World War 2 in reality was about one thing at it's core; revenge. People think that world war 2 was this big build up to Kill Jews. That was part of it, but the real underlying motive of the the Eruopan part of World War 2 was revenge from World War 1. Germany was basically Beatrix Kiddo in Kill bill, making a list of people who did them wrong and going out and killing them for the wrongs that were brought on them for the first world war. That's why France was occupied. That's why they tried to occupy Britain and that's why if they would have succeed with that, they would have came here next.
World War 2 was basically a backlash from the Treaty of Versailles
