It had gotten stale on another site before this site even existed.

Unfortunately, it seems that is the only thing some people post on here along with grammar corrections.
I just wanted to point out that
quote:
If the Germans wouldn't have bombed Pearl Harbor
should be "If the Germans hadn't bombed Pearl Harbor".

You don't really see it much anymore anywhere else. That posting of old newspapers or screen caps of old news like the astronaut one earlier was pretty popular for a bit a long time ago.

someone saw it on another board and started using it.
I started posting on UGA's Rivals board in 2000 and people were already saying it then. I wouldn't be surprised if it originated on teh first message board created on the internet.

I first saw it on TOS. As someone else already mentioned, people would respond to a news story or joke that had already been posted by responding with other old news like "Man walks on moon" or "Earth's crust cools".
It was inevitable that one of the responses would be a reference to Pearl Harbor, and that developed into "Germans bombed Pearl Harbor", then just "Germans" or some variation thereof.

The old Tiger Lair, IIRC. I've often stated that I recall being in the thread where it happened - at least on that site and it was my first exposure to it - where it went from "Earth cools" - "Man walks on Moon", "Pearl Harbor attacked", finally to "Germans bomb Pearl Harbor" - then "Germans" became the shorthand on that site shortly thereafter.
And it migrated over to the Rant from there, again, if I recall correctly.

Love me some Stork.
I wouldn't be surprised if this originated on old DOS-based BBS systems pre-Windows 1991.
It didn't start here, in fact, anyone that claims to have been on the site it first started on is a liar. Posters may remember when it was introduced here, but not its origin.

Not sure if it is limited to sports boards, but the boards I was a part of back when this was popular never shortened it to just Germans. Most stuck with just the newspaper pics with a rare Animal House reference as a joke.
The old big news pics originate from somewhere else though. Using those as repost spam is super old.

why did you bump this dumb thread after it had already died out?
do you really expect someone to know the answer to that? Actually hold up, nevermind....wikipedia tells me that Jeffrey Roberts in des moines, Iowa on January 14th 1982 said Germans to his friend while in his basement while having an argument about television shows.

because I don't live on the OT 24/7 and am days later replying to the thread.

I always saw it used on totse.com as a way to reference repeating something that didn't work very well the first time.
That was back in 2000ish.
