I watched an episode of Whistleblowers I dvr'd from last night. In short, a company was giving kickbacks to doctors to use their products.

Doctors started doing back surgery on a lot of people who didn't need it. The demand of those products resulted in that company getting them made from a mechanical shop, which wasn't made from the same material the South Korean company used to make them. The South Korean company's product was designed with material that wouldn't cause problems.. Like infections, etc.

There were 12 different doctors receiving kickbacks so every time they did these surgeries, they were getting tickets to Super Bowl and other sporting events, had wine flown in for them, prostitutes, etc.

You can check it out here.

LINK

But how common do you think it is for companies to charge insurance companies for things that are not needed or for items much more expensive than what was actually used?

Or how many doctors get kickbacks for using a certain company's product, etc?

None, it's very illegal now.

None of this is to say that healtchcare isn't too conviluted or that it's hindered by government intervention, but your specific questions don't happen

Then I never prescribe their stuff because generics are often just as good and cheap AF

This is an example. It isn't the only one. The healthcare industry is the easiest industry to take advantage of.. Im not trying to put politics into this. I am just wondering, is it something that is done often, to some degree, etc.

My best friend is a surgeon and he’s taken me with him on several trips/outings paid for by drug reps and medical device salesmen. Golf, guided fishing trips, courtside NBA seats, etc

ETA He hasn’t been handed cash or told he will get abc if he does xyz, but it’s kinda understood

Name one industry that doesn’t have indirect kickbacks??

There are a lot of ‘scratch my back I will scratch yours’ deals out there in just about every single industry.

If you think life is bad when people get extra incentives to do things, wait till you see it when the government, which has no incentive at all, takes over.

Do those industries take an oath (like the Hippocratic oath) not to do exactly that?

If we want to fix the Healthcare mess, we need fixed plan pricing for healthcare.

The Healthcare provider gets to pick their price. But they charge that price to every one who gets the service. No exceptions.

What does this accomplish?
It is the first step of putting market forces back into Healthcare (they haven't been there in a long time).

If your Health insurance doesnt pay all of the bill, the patient can do one of 4 things.
1) pay cash for the difference.
2) switch health insurance companies
3) switch to a less expensive health provider
4) not get the procedure.

This goes for prescriptions from the pharmacy as well. Flat rate regardless of coupon, discount, promo, or prescription drug plan.

The fifteenth of each month, the provider publishes rates effective on the first of the month to allow the provider fluidity to adapt to market demands.
Scheduling a procedure 6 months out? The rate sheet locks in that appointment at a scheduled rate (similar to mortgage locks).

We are in a cluster-frick right now because we have the worst health system in the world. No market forces affect our healthcare system. High demand for the best health care providers drive prices up which the entire industry takes advantage of from the insurance payments.

Not nearly as corrupt as it will be once we move to single payer.

Came here to say this exact same thing.

One thing you have to love about the OT is certain people's ability to embellish.

Once Obama let the cat out of the bag it all went to shite, premiums up 300-400% as well as deductibles.

I remember our first meeting with United Healthcare after this and they calmly explained how we would be paying 3 times as much for a way inferior product.

Compare this to the average wage increase of 3% and he set the workforce back 10 years.

Way to show you have no clue how the healthcare system works. I, as a provider, do nothing to pick my price, if I take insurance. The contract I sign with each insurance company says how much they will pay me for something. And, you as the patient don’t have to pay any more than is allowable by the insurance company.

For example, say I charge $2000 for a gallbladder surgery, insurance says max allowable is $1400. They will pay their portion, dependent on what your plan says. If you’ve hit your deductible and in an 80/20, they’ll pay $1120, and you’ll be on the hook for $280.

Sure, you could find another provider to look for a better price, but everyone in the region will be paid the same by insurance.

And lastly on that, everyone is charged the same exact rate, no exceptions because it is mandated by GOVERNMENT. I can’t give you a discount because we’re best friends, I can’t give you a discount because you can’t pay, I can’t give you a discount just because I like you and want to help, and I can’t barter with you.

quote:

because we have the worst healthcare system in the world

We may not be listed as best, but we are far, far, far away from worst. And honestly the rankings are crap, since every countries statistics are based on different metrics. Our infant death rate is higher than most, but that’s because we include many things other nations do not include. Our life expectancies are worse, but that’s because we have a severely unhealthy, sedentary, and overweight population, that refuse to go to the doctor until they’re on deaths door, refuse to take medications, or refuse to make themselves healthier.

Lastly, everyone expects a Ferrari when all they can afford is a Kia. A certain segment of the population (uneducated) expect everything done to save grandma and grandpa, when the best they’re ever going to be is lying there in bed. And we spend billions on these people to keep them alive for years. And most of these families skip town when their loved ones are ready for discharge, so they just lie there in bed, wards on the state, constantly rolling up the cost.
