How big of a lawsuit will it be?

Whenever a company finally develops a "self driven" car where it needs NO driver AND the car malfunctions and kills someone in an accident, how big of a lawsuit will it be? seems like it will be a very easy case to win.
if you take human error out of the equation, the lawsuit is a cinch.

Normal, stupid people do this every day. I’d rather have a self driving car where we have to talk about the possibility of it maybe happening one time

I guess what I mean is, just how big would the lawsuit be?
If a child is killed in an accident that is somehow caused by this robotic car, can you imagine how much money will be on the table? the sky would be the limit.

I think the lawsuit would be considerably bigger if the person that was killed was not a passenger in the self driven car. An argument could be made that by surrendering complete control to a machine, you accept some level of risk. I’m not an attorney so that is a complete shot in the dark.

A child is killed by a drunk driver every few hours. A self driving car has never caused an accident unless it was being manually piloted by a human. Self driving cars are safer than people like you driving

The exact same size as the ones filed almost daily against humans convicted of vehicular homicide?
My guess is they'll just cap auto deaths.
Accidents and injuries are bound to arise when we start implementing auto-cars, but there's almost no possible way they aren't safer than human driven.
The problem comes from how the cars react to life threatening situations, like the irobot dilemma.

The problem with self driving cars is that the shift will need to be swift and really big. Human error will always trump computer error

I'm sure there will always be a disclaimer that someone needs to at the wheel paying attention in case of some sort of system malfunction.

This.....the consumer will still have some responsibility....scheduled maintenance, software updates, observing visible problems that require service...so that will require them to maintain insurance.
Also a large insurance company has better resources to fight with the car companies in court than the consumer does.

Dead children don't put "numbers on the board", children that need massive amounts of medical care for the rest of their life do.
I don't see runaway juries in these cases. I could be wrong though.

I think your question misses the biggest issue that could arise, which IMO is some sort of software glitch or hacking scandal.

It’s already happened once. I don’t remember all of the details, but Chrysler’s Blue and Me system(or whatever it’s called) was hacked a few years back. I imagine that somebody bright enough could take over the controls of a vehicle theough something similar on an automated vehicle. That scares me more than any simple error that could arise randomly.

Yeah but normal, stupid people aren't sitting on millions of dollars.
Truth is, there is going to have to be some sort of regulations in place to limit liabilities for self driving cars to succeed

Probably more like homeowners insurance works today. The underwriting would be less complicated I imagine.
