I go through ATL several times a year. If you avoid rush hour it's USUALLY not too bad, although a wreck or stalled vehicle can really back traffic up. Just have patience and allow yourself enough time.

If you're just going to be on I20 going straight through you won't really have any issues unless you're going in the next hour or between 3-6pm. The big congestion in Atlanta is people trying to get in or get out and using 285 and all the other big insterstates taking you north (not a ton of people are traveling south below 20). If you're just going straight west to east in the middle of the day you shouldn't really expect anything other than normal big city traffic.
eta: I see you're going to be needing 85N. That will be a little less of a breeze than going straight through but again if you go midday you shouldn't be too bad off. Just get to Atl prior to about 2 or 3pm to be safe.

Middle of the week try and get through between 10 and 2. If you're going through on a Sunday get through as early as possible. 85 south is pretty much locked up on Sunday afternoons. If not, prepare to want to kick puppies out of anger.

Getting on the road much later than I anticipated, can someone please post directions on a route bypassing. According to Google to go up 55 to Chattanooga and then cut over the Asheville is an extra hour and a half and going through Atlanta but I would be going through Atlanta at rush hour. Is there a quick way to go from Chattanooga to Asheville without having to go north?

Not on a main road. It is a very pretty drive from Chatt to Asheville and if you sit in normal traffic in ATL then the 90 minutes wasted is reduced...If there is an issue then you MAY come out ahead.

Once you get into NC from the Ocoee, take 64 in Murphy, through Hayesville, and over the Franklin mountain to Asheville.

The only time traffic hasn't been a pain in the arse for me is at 4 am. I live just northeast of ATL and we rarely go to the city due to the shite traffic.

There is no easy way to bypass. Is someone else traveling with you? The reason I ask is if so you can jump in the HOV lanes through downtown but once you get on the north side it's a toll lane so you'll have to jump out. If you're passing through after 3pm you are going to hit heavy traffic the route you are going. I10 to I65 to I85 all the way into NC. You can go through Knoxville and cut over on 26 (I believe) but I don't think that will be an easier way.

Traffic here sucks. Plain and simple. Don't think about rolling into town anytime 6:30-10:00am or from 3:00-7:30pm.
