If you can try and get through between 10am and 2pm. Unless you wanna time it at like 5am or past 11pm It won't be wide open but 285 and I-20 are a lot better while most people are at work. The 18 wheeler traffic and construction along with people just living there make it hard to get all the way through without any slowdowns.

I assumed he meant he didn't want to go to Knoxville(who can blame him)when he said he didn't want to go north. The turns aren't bad once you're out of the Ocoee. You can easily make up time on 64.

Frankly I'd rather deal with Houston or Atlanta traffic than the hopelessly soul crushing BR nightmare traffic. Bc I can accept bad traffic in a huge city. And those cities at least try to alleviate the traffic. BR doesn't even try to deal with the problem. Like it's a Badge of honor for the city.

Avoid the Smyrna area on the loop. Everything under construction on 75 and the watermelon 500 getting ready for the Braves new stadium.

Good luck. It is really bad. Know it will possible take you 3 hours longer to get anywhere as opposed to the weekend. Luck !!!!

Damn wish I had seen this earlier. Between knox and ash right now. Wanted to go the way you suggested but was nervous bc im tired and was worried about the turns in the dark. It really would have worked better bc I am going to Hendersonville which is south of ash.
Anyway thanks for all the help from everyone, much appreciated. Now hoping this storm doesn't ruin the trip.

West Asheville if I remember correctly. When I first moved here I lived in Hendersonville. I called it Hellville 
Seeing as you're green head, you should probably hit up Green Man brewery too.
Universal Joint and The Lab are good options as well. Basically anywhere in West Asheville and you won't be disappointed.
DuPont state park has some good trails. Lots of scenes in The Hunger Games were filmed there. The parkway around Shining Rock, Black Balsam and the Graveyard fields is another great option. Sam's Knob Trail is one of my favorite day hikes.

I to moved to Atl from BR recently and you're head on!! At worst time of traffic it takes hour to go from north portion of city to south and that's 35 miles down 285 or 85 it moves Google map gps my new love
