How are blacks not underrepresented in the LSU admissions process?

I was on campus when they had a ton of new students coming through. Had to be 40% black. Athletes are only a very small fraction of the student population. I look up demographics of 1st year Freshman at LSU and it's around 1/3rd black which is what the state is.
Most black schools in Louisiana are low performing. Blacks on average score lower on standardized testing.
Yet, they are getting into the state's flagship university at a normal clip?
Digging deeper, the state is 62.3% non-hispanic white, but the recent incoming freshman classes are only 50% non-hispanic white. Whites gain ground in the overall student body population because they have higher retention and graduation rates than blacks, but they are still under-represented. Why are whites under-represented at LSU while blacks are not?
Is there still discrimination going on?

Eliminated the strict ACT requirement. Brought it back last year but there’s no minimum score requirement anymore
I think when I enrolled ~20 years ago it was a 25 minimum

Are Republicans truly powerless to fix this?
They control every branch of government. They have replaced the majority of the LSU Board of Supervisors and have replaced LSU's top leadership position.
What else would it take?

Long story short, it’s to fleece the TOPS scholarship program. They know the lower kids they admit will drop early after they get the taxpayer coin. It not based on race, but on low performers.
The drop off from first year student population to graduation is steep.

It was not a 25 minimum in 2006
More like 20. Maybe.

What’s so funny? Googled and it was minimum 22.
I might be thinking it was higher or looked better if you hadn’t taken physics or something
Nevertheless 22 is much higher than the zeros they let in now

What exactly is there to fix here?

Last 2 less than 50%. We will find out what the official 2026 fall freshman class demos are before too long.
I would bet blacks have also made up a large part of the increase in out of state enrollees. Seems like there used to be a benefit for universities to enroll out of state Pell grant eligible students (might still be a benefit but not sure).
quote:Yes but in favor of blacks or maybe non-whites over whites while hiding behind holistic admissions along with not requiring ACT/SAT submissions for admission and scholarship considerations to help mask enrollees with inflated GPAs being awarded scholarships and placed into honors college over others including in state applicants.
Is there still discrimination going on?

It's much easier to make a 4.6 GPA at Glen Oaks High School than it is at Dutchtown High School.

Bias in favor of blacks and against whites.

Wasting tax money on kids that will never graduate to hit some imaginary diversity number?

I think this:
Is a much stronger argument than this:
But you can't guarantee that any kid that starts college today will finish. But I still understand the frustration of a LA taxpayer the way you framed it.

Thats the old way not the Tate way with voluntary ACT/SAT scores and quickly increasing total enrollees each year while continuing holistic admissions and scholarship decisions. They are holistically getting actual scholarships, grants, and extra help with classes. Many are actually from out of state as well, so TOPs isnt part of it for them.
Fall to fall blacks are increasing quickly since Tate started in both freshman classes and total undergraduate enrollees, and they have also slowed down dropping in Spring.
From fall of 2024 undergraduates to the spring of 2025 blacks dropped by less than 460 in total number while maintaining being 20.9% of the undergraduates on campus while whites dropped by around 1,200 while staying at around 57%. They are increasing in numbers and % while whites have been decreasing in numbers and % in freshman classes and total undergraduate enrollees.
Tate may have been a racist, but he was a not stupid racist. He made holistic offers to blacks and non-whites with inflated GPAs unchecked by ACT/SAT scores that they weren’t getting elsewhere making it more likely for them to stay as long as possible.
