China may have been relatively advanced as well as the Arab countries,
Arabs were never advanced and Islam never allowed for much progress. It's a total myth perpetrated by liberal historians who want to paint medieval Islam as being some sort of utopian society. Fact is, the inventions which came from the Muslim world were almost always actually from a Jew, Nestorian, Zoroastrian, or Hindu. Many had taken Arab names. As the conquered peoples slowly either converted to Islam or fled, the Islamic world lost it's inventiveness. So it wasn't simply the sack of Baghdad that made Islam stifling and regressive. It was always that way and simply cannibalized itself.

What if the Kahns wouldn't have sacked and destroyed Baghdad eventually ending the Islamic golden age? Would Europe have ever even came out of the dark ages?

Blame it on the Turks.
Edit:
It's nobody's business but the Turks.
I've always thought "Istanbul (not Constantinople)" was a They Might Be Giants original, but it was a cover from 1953.

Rome deserves more credit than concrete of course. It's the most influental empire.
Influential bc it was big and long lasting, no doubt. Rome left a memory in the European mind. But it's technological advancements are overstated. Yes they were incredible builders, but what they built was not new. Just bigger.

The Romans were operating on people. Their advancements extend past bridges.

City structure, political structure and so so. English is mostly made up of their words. We are using their letters to talk to each other now.

Again, Islam never had a golden age. It's a myth. How fragile do you think that culture must be, for one sacking to utterly destroy and transform it forever?

Most historians now refuse to even use the term "dark ages" and the fall of Baghdad in the 13th century did not bring Europe out of the dark ages which traditionally is the period around 6th-9th centuries.

An interesting thing about technology is its continued progress despite politics. If you look at Moore's law since we started keeping records, it doesn't dip or drop despite war, recession or prosperity.
Outside of something disastrous like Islam or other especially anti-science political movements, progress keeps on keeping on.
That's a long winded way of saying, it wouldn't be much different technologically.

Western Civilization certainly stalled during the Middle Ages, but I'm not sure that holds true for the rest of the world
There was a plague that killed a lot of western civilization

Jesus, bro. You're woefully ignorant of Roman history.

quote:check out the podcast 'History of Byzantium'. Same guy that did History of Rome. His voice takes a bit to getting use to, he is British I think. But it's packed full of info.
So, you don't know too much about the Byzantine Empire, huh?

Meh, then you should have been a fan of the Ottoman empire.
Pre-WWI there was no major conflicts in the middle East. Once the Europeans arrived, it became a mess.
ETA: guess who was there before the Ottomans? The Byzantine Empire (Eastern Roman Empire).

How bad off would we be if christianity was never founded? Monks replicated all the books in monasteries before the printing press was invented.

Mike Duncan did the History of Rome podcast. He is doing a Revolutions podcast now. The History of Byzantium is being done by someone else as an extension of the History of Rome.

The industrial revolution happens in 1000AD rather than 1800AD.

A even better question is if there wasnt a flood.

A way better question is the burning of the library
This is very true. I don't think many people understand the significance of the this. A possible comparison would be if the world woke up one day and found the internet gone. Just how far would that set us back? I have read that space flight may have occurred 300 years ago had the Alexandria library not burned.. Obviously all conjecture and make for interesting conversation. Access to and the dissemination of information is what pushes society forward in general. Although I must admit that social media seems to be is pulling us down at an equal pace.

The Americas would still be too far stretched out of their armies & resources to affect us.
