I subscribe to the belief that the 1600 years of open competition outweigh any economies of scale the romans created.

Y'all should listen to the Thor's Angels hardcore history episode.

Without the fall of the Roman Empire you likely don't have the rise of empires like France and Britain.

Philip K Dick believed the Roman Empire never fell and what we see is just an illusion.

Less than it is now. People like to forget all the awful stuff the empire did, especially under the late empire revival that set back Europe quite always.

Never forget, the empire stopped existing because people didn't want to to exist anymore.

The Constantine/Diocletian group instituted serfdom. Inflation was at insane levels due to debasement. They instituted social immobility making it illegal to not have the same job as your father.

To be fair they offered the people a choice of releasing him, and they chose the sex offender Barabas instead.

Therefore the fall of Rome can clearly be blamed on rape culture.

I've always thought Rome would either hold technological innovation back or technology would look radically different than it does today.
