A woman who fled an Alexandria hospital when police began investigating a serious injury to her toddler later was identified as the same woman who left four children alone at Winterfete just the day before, according to a release. Detectives from the Alexandria Police Department's juvenile division had spotted four kids at Winterfete on Dec. 2. The children — 14, 10, 9 and 2 — "were without coats or jackets despite the rainy, inclement weather," reads the release.

An investigation revealed that the mother of the 2-year-old, 21-year-old Jessica Kellen Peart of the 3100 block of Monroe Street in Alexandria, had left the all of the children at the downtown Alexandria festival unattended. Peart was supposed to be caring for the other three children, too, according to the department's release. Then, on Dec. 3, detectives were called to a hospital regarding a possible child abuse case. The toddler had been injured seriously enough to require hospitalization, reads the release. "While detectives were investigating the matter, the mother of the child falsified her name to investigators and shortly after fled from the hospital, leaving her child there," it reads. "Detectives ultimately learned that this was the same woman from the Dec. 2 incident."

Detectives got a warrant for Peart's arrest, and she was taken into custody on Wednesday. She was booked into the Rapides Parish Detention Center, charged with two counts of child desertion, two counts of criminal abandonment, attempted contributing to the delinquency of a minor and resisting an officer. Bond on those charges was set at $12,000, but Peart remains in jail without bond on other unrelated charges. She also faces one count of burglary of a dwelling, one count of worthless checks between $500 and $1,500, possession of a controlled dangerous substance II, three counts of contempt of court and two counts of probation violation. Total bond on those charges are $33,000, but there is no bond on either of the probation violation charges.
