It would be pretty sweet to have rails running through the triangle of Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, and Houston.

but I think it is pointless.

It's 8 hours of unproductive travel in a car roundtrip.

It's (in theory) 3 potentially productive hours in a train roundtrip.

Or 3-4 hours of moderately productive time on one of our luxurious and spacious airlines.

It's an alternative service in an already very limited market. It's privately funded. It will be run for profit. It's a perfect example of capitalism and free markets, is it not?

ETA: Excluding regulations imposed by whatever traffic and safety board that has oversight.

I think it will happen, but the hyperloop would be a better choice for the money. Dallas to Austin in 19 minutes at 700mph.

Would rather 40 minute train ride to Austin. Go frick yourself, Dallasian.

I think at one point the proposal was a triangle between Houston/Dallas/Austin but it's going to be hard enough to get this done. If it does it will be finished like 20 years from now

They seem to be raising money for it. Texas is pretty aggressive when it comes to infrastructure.

Imagine living in the Brazos valley and being able to commute to Houston or Dallas in 45 minutes. This will open up a lot of areas to affordable development - which will make Texas more competitive in the long run.

I wish Louisiana would think like that. I still can't believe that the one Louisiana governor that was known for being aggressive about building roads was the fricking socialist.

Like all passenger rail, it will take a while before it will pay for itself. It will probably impact development in the area it serves to the point that people will become more dependent on the line. From there, they could add more express trains, more stops, and spurs to other cities like Austin or San Antonio etc.

It makes the two largest cities in Texas seamless and boundless.

I know some folks spend more than 2 hours in their car a day right now.

Hyperloop is still only an alternative "in theory". It's essentially a super high speed subway tube. I don't think it will be particularly affordable to build or to use.

A high speed rail line built over the surface today can always be upgraded for even higher speeds in the future too.

But with emergence of self driving vehicles it'll be interesting to see how the demand for these trains evolves

Solid point, IMO.

Hooray. A $10B eyesore that will have to be funded by public money once the private company collapses into bankruptcy because no one will ride the fricking thing.

Thank God we got those frickers to not go through our neighborhood. Was staring down the very real possibility of having a 30 foot high railway look down at my back fricking yard.

i get the skepticism about it ever happening, but i love that these projects are actually getting greenlit. now funding it is the issue, i sure hope the big pockets are willing to step up and deliver what's needed here.

Exactly. The people who are against these ideas are short term thinkers. I would love to work in a state where owning a vehicle is optional. A high speed rail system in the SE would cause a population boom.

I agree. To me it seems to be the next evolution though. The high speed rail is legit and will work.

However if Texas was the first to implement the first working Hyperloop, global domination would be ours.

Texas is a fairly safe environment for the loop from a natural disaster standpoint, however I do wonder what they do about the tornado threat.

This is a very legitimate concern.
