. we drove up and hiked Tallulah Gorge which was pretty damn cool. Nothing remotely close to that anywhere near Houston.

Atlanta, many different ethnicities. Very forward thinking, progressive people. Infrastructure solid and always improving. All different types of neighborhoods to live in. Condo, high rise, nice homes with property. Wherever you live majority of what you need for essential living is less than 5 minutes away from home. Mostly all major companies are here or have a regional office here so that tell you money is here to be made. AWESOME PLACE!! plenty to do all the time any day of the week! Left BR to Atl and never going back.

The running joke in Atlanta is it takes a half hour to go anywhere...

Economy - edge Houston, but Atlanta is pretty strong
Natural Aesthetics - Huge Atlanta, much more attractive place
Weather - Solidly Atlanta
Sports - Hard to say without bias, but clearly the Falcons are more competitive, CFB is probably a little better in Atlanta and the Atlanta soccer team has more enthusiasm at the moment than any team in either city. Two new Atlanta stadiums help.
Upscale areas - River Oaks is probably a little better than Buckhead, so Houston
Suburbs - Houston
Government - Both are terrible. No income tax in Texas, so Houston
Crime - Draw
Things to do outside of the city - Huge Atlanta
I am biased and prefer Houston because all my friends are here, but the outdoor and weather stuff is definitely the best argument for Atlanta over Houston from an objective standpoint. Both cities have strong economies and really nice areas to live in for people with money, while being affordable for young and middle class folks. Great food, pro sports, multiple areas for nightlife, airport with direct access to anywhere in the world you would want to go.
Being so close to the lakes in NE GA while also being close to the nice part of the gulf is hard for Houston beat, plus reasonable weather on top of it

Word of advice to test it out if not buying a home right away move in Town Brookhaven everything you need right there when walking out your door. 40-50% cheaper than Buckhead and your only 3 minutes down Peachtree from Phipps Plaza or Lenox. Very vibrant area!

Houston > Atlanta I live in Atlanta, it sucks fricking arse, do not live here
I do as well and yes, it sucks balls but so does Houston. Both are big grey boring turd cities and I'll concede Houston is the better of the two but a half day drive in any direction from ATL and you can be some place great.

Houston because it's closer. I've never spent any significant amount of time in Atlanta

at this point, id give ATL a couple year chance to steal my heart. I wouldn't move to HOU from NOLA with similar circumstances.
I've been to ATL over 30 times probably and it had never 'whOoOd' me... but I'd give it a chance. Among other of the top urban areas in the SE.
Ideally I'd much rather be able to afford to live center city in one of the metros on the East Coast. NYC, DC, BOS, even Baltimore or Philly
Judging from your writing skills, I'd say you won't have to worry about choosing cities due to multiple job offers.

I've lived in both and Atlanta is my choice. While I enjoyed my time in Houston and met a lot of great people, I believe Atlanta wins in a landslide. Houston, is flat, ugly, hot, and epitome of a concrete jungle. Atlanta is within driving distance to better beaches, mountains, and others places of interest. Atlanta has all 4 seasons and is a much prettier city. Food scene is probably a toss up. Atlanta doesn't have to compete with other cities expept maybe Nashville in terms of events like Houston has to with Dallas, SA, and ATX. Also in Atlanta, no matter what type of person you are, there's a neighborhood for you.

I believe it's Hurricane Falls at Tallulah Gorge. It could be Panther Creek Falls though, I've never been so I don't know how similar they look. I just googled Tallulah Gorge and that was one of the images.
On a somewhat related note, we camped at Cloudland Canyon for Memorial Day and I highly recommend it if you haven't been. The "back country" (they have their own outhouses) camp sites were all really cool and the hiking was excellent.

I have a place in the woodlands and really like it. The ATL is too democrat for me

Considering these are the two cities I've lived in during my life, I'll chime in.
The answer is Atlanta but it's close. Atlanta has worse traffic, but only by a hair. The weather blows Houston out of the water. Also more diverse landscapes to visit within a 3 hour drive of the metro area. Houston wins in the food and culture department.

Hell, I say Atlanta because frick the Falcons.
In Atlanta you're guaranteed one Saints game a year.
Others have posted other reasons I think it's preferable: climate, topography, location. Traffic is shite and the restaurant scene is a bit lacking for a city its size, but it's a nicer place than Houston by a good bit.

Not true, you just need to know where to look.
