On the surface I think this is a good thing, but I don't think it will work in a place like Houston that is so spread out and reliant on cars. People that are interested in a walkable lifestyle are already living in the areas that can support it.

I’m assuming this is targeted at the inner loop area where it doesn’t take an hour to get around.

They took a lane out of the bridge on Houston avenue that connects the heights to downtown, causing more traffic and backups on the bridge, even though there is a bike lane along the bayou that goes downtown basically on a parallel path.
While I was commuting for months after the change, I could count the bikes I saw on it on two hands

The problem is you can't get anywhere in Houston without a car
Not to mention the public transportation system is not there to have this to begin with.
They would need to put a subway style system from downtown to all the suburbs

Generally true but there are certain neighborhoods that are walkable.
I can walk to 4 restaurants, a bar, the trails, Lowe's, CVS, and a doggy daycare from my house in The Heights. That is a large part of the appeal for my neighborhood.

They can start around Uptown along 610 west loop.

I totally disagree with this proposition, primarily because it would be insanely expensive. People coming from the suburbs will always drive, and probably should drive. The goal I think is to allow for people who don't have to drive due to density/geometry to have other reasonable options.

Looking at the pictures in the article, all I see is overgrown grass clogging street drains and blocked sidewalks. If they cleaned that up, it might be walkable the way it is.

I'm sure the homeless around the bus station on Grey will appreciate Turner's efforts.
