My mistake...
I understand that rent is high in some urban markets (NYC, SF, Boston, some areas of Los Angeles, etc.), but when you start talking about the home and HOTEL your family owns in the FQ, it kind of sounds like you're bragging a little bit.

My apologies for coming across that way. The hotel is a small boutique place that has been in our family for a few generations, it's not like we run the Fairmont or Ritz. I was simply trying to explain how I do in fact have personal ties to New Orleans. Despite only being two years removed from LA, I tend to have to defend myself from Yankee comments.

It really just has to do with you constantly acting like an arrogant a-hole who is better than people who live in Louisiana just because you moved away and are proud of yourself for doing so.

I love Louisiana and its home no matter where I live. It sucks that if I make an observation about home, which I would have also made while living there, it comes across as being arrogant. And I really do mean that.
Where I live is great, and where I come from is great. Im certainly happy to experience a new place, but to be proud of doing something that anyone with a car, money for a plane ticket, or even a thumb to hitch hike with would be odd.
I simply wanted to talk about the original topic because I find it interesting and I've always thought that New Orleans had much more potential than its lived up to. It would be great if we could get back to that topic and not on your disdain for me.

Rising property values and the associated increases in taxes seems to be the only way to keep the city moving in the right direction. The infrastructure requires significant dollars. I know that people are paying a lot to live in New Orleans between mortgage, insurance, and property taxes. However, what is the alternative? We have to rebuild the city and the bottom 50% don't have any money.

Dude you are completely missing the point. The area described in the OP is a fricking hood. The fact that someone would pay 300k for the opportunity to live in fear is pretty crazy.

It's frustrating. This week one of my HS friends put his house up for sale in BR, in what I think of as a good neighborhood. It's a huge double lot, 2,500 sq ft, and it's listed at 200K. That house would easily go for 500K in my area, given the size of the lot. And I know for a fact that salaries in New Orleans aren't double what they are in Baton Rouge.

Come to Austin. Rental market is almost as bad as San Fran in downtown. On the housing side, real estate has appreciated 10% a year and more. Fed is keeping paper cheap right now. This has bust written all over again.
