I never tipped at hotels until I read Nickled and Dimed In America. The author took jobs like Wal-Mart, Denny's waitress, and hotel maid and tried to live on her income.
That hotel maid job is harder than hell, especially if you have back issues. Lots of mattress lifting, bending, etc., plus finding some incredibly disgusting shite in psycho's rooms. And management puts them under pressure to crank out so many rooms per shift.
Now I tip just out of pity for the women. I figure a couple bucks a day won't kill me, but it may pay their bus fare or something.

Tip daily, usually $2 and change in pocket. If you wait until of stay to tip, maid doesn't know that she will get tipped and usually doesn't go the extra mile.
Not just that, but there's no guarantee that it'll be the same maid every day, so if you only tip at the end of your stay, it all goes to just one maid when there may have been others that cleaned your room during your stay.

I didn't ever realize it was customary to tip in a hotel room. At least not when you aren't in one of higher end places.
Is there any way to highlight that such and such is a tip or do they gobble any loose money like a hungry hungry hippo?

I'm not attacking people that tip housekeeping, I am defending non-tippers from the holier than thou crowd.
I haven't really seen enough attacks that they need defending. But I get your point.

There it is. You should just give them your paycheck.

I'm sure they appreciate the fact that you think you're better than them and they deserve your pity.

You are only perpetuating the cycle of poverty in their life. If they want more money they should be more motivated to change their life. Instead of making you feel guilty for their situation.
That was a good one.

I have seen those threads and was just fricking with based on them. I've even been known to wear a pair of jeans more than once.

I always leave $3-$5 on the dresser when I leave the room each day with a note "For our housekeeper. Thank you!"
That way there is no doubt I intended the money for them.

So somebody please explian tip ediquate when it comes to housekeeping. Do you do it? If so how much? Is it performance based? Is it based on a 0-10 scale. With 0 being they never showed or showed only long enough to steal your watch and camera. and 10 being a happy ending while getting your towels bleached??
I usually tip like $2 or $3 a day. I leave it in envelope with "housekeeping tip" or "for housekeeping" written on it. One hotel in Canada that I stayed at actually provided envelopes meant for tipping the maids.
I guess it's not really performance based because you leave the tip in the room before they actually clean it, so if they do a bad job, it's not like you can get it back. Maybe I'm just good at picking quality hotels or something, or maybe tipping really works, but I've never had a problem with housekeeping to make me wish I hadn't tipped.

This is true. I tip as well, not because I'm worried I will get a dirty glass (I don't use glasses in hotel rooms anyway), but because it's a thankless job and deserves something.

You should respond, "thanks for the blessing, I won 10k on a scratch off"

Interesting... 8 pages and none of the grammar Nazis have corrected Quita's spelling.

I've never tipped at a hotel. ALthough i always leave the do not disturb hanger on the door.
I don't need someone making my bed and cleaning a clean room. And i don't want them snooping around with my stuff there.
Just stay out my room until my stay is over.
