The tipping culture in America is completely out of control.

Seems enough people here do it that it isn't some completely foreign or outrageous idea.

Literally had never heard of anyone doing this until this thread.

I'm also willing to bet most people here don't spend 3-4 nights a week in a hotel.

If everyone of our employee's expenses $3 maid tip per night that's another $20,000 gone a year.

So you cheap bastards don't tip the bell hop? The valet?

Why do you tip the waiters and bartenders?

Yes. What is so funny about a kind gesture towards someone in a worse position than me that is providing an appreciated service?

There it is. You should just give them your paycheck.

Because their tips are factored into their wages. They make like $2 an hour from the restaurant they work at because tips are factored into their wage.

They should get a better paying job, not rely on handouts.

See how that works?

Fair point, but I wouldn't expect or allow my employees to expense a tip of any kind. That brings up interesting discussion though.

For the record, I am not an employer.

Bit of a leap there. I like to help people. Since when is that a bad thing?

It's not, I'm sure they appreciate the fact that you think you're better than them and they deserve your pity.

It doesn't work. The maid is making minimum wage whereas the waiter and bartender, without tips, are not.

You are only perpetuating the cycle of poverty in their life. If they want more money they should be more motivated to change their life. Instead of making you feel guilty for their situation.

It was suggested that maids should get a better paying job if they need more money. I posit that the same could be said for bartenders and waitresses. Why doesn't that work?

Because I leave a couple dollars for a hard working immigrant who cleaned the shite streaks from the toilet bowl? You seem jaded and angry.

Try some Metamucil. End of problem - no unsightly shite streaks.

It seemed to me like you were equating the argument that if maids want more money they should get better jobs to the same argument made about bartenders and waiters without tips.

The two are not similar. If you don't tip bartenders and waiters they make $2/hr. If you don't tip a maid they still make $8 which is minimum wage.

Not true, but I see the point you're trying to make
