Last night I searched Google news for specifics on this wreck.
Hard to find much this morning too. Was hoping more details would be out by now.

That’s so sad. I know taking I-10 to the beach for Memorial Day felt like a NASCAR race. Traffic was moving at decent speed, but it was bumper to bumper. I had white knuckles the entire time driving with the wife and kids in the car.

This.
The number of people I see looking down (or "ahead") at their phones while driving is disturbing.
In my neighborhood. On streets. On the interstate.
Couple that with "infotainment" screens in most new cars (that are the size of a damned tablet in some cases) and it's a recipe for disaster.

that may be part of the problem but the main issue is people driving too fast and selfishly. all those comments on the first page about speed are 100% true. ive driven that stretch many times a year for 20 years. if you drive 100 you will be passed many times. and so many drivers are just carelessly selfish

The official number of fatalities from the crash is 10, with 9 of them ranging in age from 9 months old to teenagers. 8 of the fatalities were from the Tallapoosa County Girls Ranch vehicle, the other two were from another vehicle.

A Tallapoosa County Girls Ranch vehicle and another vehicle were involved in the crash, likely caused by hydroplaning during Saturday storms, said Butler County Coroner Wayne Garlock.
A father and 9-month-old girl were killed one vehicle and the other eight victims were in the Girls Ranch vehicle, Garlock said.

Damn. I figured most of the fatalities were from that girls ranch van after I heard about it bring in the wreck.

And following too closely. In general, people follow way too close on the interstate leaving themselves no time to react.

What were the winds like at that location at the time of the wreck? That car carrier could have gotten blown around while he was hydroplaning

8 people from the Tallapoosa County Girls Ranch died from the crash. Ages were not specified to me.

FWIW, Alabama has a highway road rage law. It’s is technically illegal to “ride” in the passing lane on state highways. If you’re not passing you’re getting back in right lane ASAP

If only they'd actually enforce this.

Is it just me or have drivers on interstates become more and more aggressive? Constant tailgating, weaving in and out of lanes, and going 85+.

Yeah. Seems like they passed that law a few years ago. I can’t remember the details but I think you can only ride in the left hand lane for maybe a mile or so to pass? But as has already been said, the law doesn’t do much good if it’s not being enforced. And Alabama doesn’t have near enough State Troopers to enforce this or any other traffic laws.

I don’t know if drivers have gotten more aggressive, but drivers have definitely gotten worse.
Left lane lurkers
Citizens arrest brigade pacing traffic
Morons that checkerboard the road, preventing passing
Mr. Blinker’s on
Mrs. Ignore the Gore (lines)
Can’t comprehend the zipper merge
Three lane change McGirk (folks that have no issue making insane decisions to catch an exit instead of coming back around)
The guy with the unsecured load (or thinking that string will keep the trampoline on the roof of his civic).

Horrific

What a terrible tragedy. Hard to believe national news isn’t covering this. 8 troubled youth/essentially orphans die in an accident while on the way to the beach with the charity that is helping them.
I can’t remember a story this awful in a long time.
