Hong Kong -- How Bad Is It?

I'm getting reports of the Chinese military ramping up and Chines sponsored gangs beating the crap out of protesters. Does anyone have any insight about how bad it is over there right now, or what China is going to do?

Must not be too bad. This is the first I've heard of civil unrest on any large scale in China.
ETA: Damn, I took some time to Google it during lunch and read a long article about the protests and government reaction. Pretty wild stuff. I honestly had no idea about it and I try to keep up with current events regularly. I'm not sure how this story slipped past me.

I was there in 2017 on the 20th anniversary of the changeover. Xi basically told them that the 50 year agreement is a gentleman’s agreement and he will crack down on any protest.
They recently had a 2 million person protest about something mainland related. Not 100% sure what it was about though.

China just issued a white paper calling separatists its biggest security threat. They included Taiwan, Tibet, and Hong Kong.
FWIW I was reading a piece by a US Army NCO who had dealt with the Chinese military on peacekeeping duty in Africa. He called them arrogant, entitled, unprofessional, and cowardly. He said if he had to take Beijing with a troop of American Boy scouts he would like his chances.
