I'd love to stay and argue, but I am off to "an evening of Lenten Reflection" at the old Alma Mater...I'll pray tonight for all those with addic..er, diseases.

i don't do na/aa anyore because i don't think addiction is a diease, i think it's just what it says, addiction. with that said, it's not just about willpower there is a lot that goes into being clean, you got to have support, you have to understand what your triggers are you have to have somewhere to stay that people can't find you at that are looking to get you back in the game and not even dealing with physical withdrawls you can talk about will power all you want but someone who is going through physical withdrawals form herion has to have an opiate or they can die without medical attention

alot of people including myself used drugs to self medicate if you dont' get actually medicated for whatever your issues are you're fighting a useless battle.

the problem i have with na/aa is that it just throws everything in the you are powerless pile when you arent powerless and you don't even try to understand what is going on with you anymore you just give up.

and girls have it much much worse than men do. most girls on H have pimps and you aint' going to just leave a pimp talking about you want to get clean, so you end up turning tricks, then feeling like shite and using drugs more so on and so on.

My heart breaks for this young girl and her family. I say this as a cocaine addict with 7 months sober.

Yea I'd venture to say that 99.99% of people who've had AIDS didn't set out to try it initially.

There is a lot of evidence that addiction is hereditary.

It really depends on how you define disease. But it's a pretty fruitless debate, it really just boils down to semantics.

Whether you call it a disease or not, it doesn't change the nature of addiction. Honestly who cares if it's a disease or not?

If I started a thread saying gay male hooker dies of aids

And I tried to say what a terrible disease he had, I would be downvoted to hell

"Play stupid games, win stupid prizes"

"Shouldn't have unprotected sex if you are gay"

Etc etc

serious question what was your addiction?

my acdtual addiction is crack cocaine. i haven't hit hte pipe since july 22nd, 2012 so i'm coming up on 5 years.

i do mess around with other drugs but they aren't addictions, so i can kinda understand where both sides are coming from. I can take meth or leave it it isn't that serious i'llk use once every 2 months or so just because im bored. i never used once a day or anything but i couldn't go more than...4-5 days without crack once i got on it i would literally lay in bed and just lock up.

i have GAD and depression and i was self medicating for the most part i've been on lexapro for just about all the time i've been off the pipe and i have literally seen dope and have no desire to use it it's just not there anymore.

i didn't even like crack lol. i really didn't. but when i would take a hit my anxiety would go from 9.9 to like 3 instantly i could take a deep breath, i could relax i could calm down, etc. that's how i knew i was addicted cause i hated the actual high but i craved the need to calm down / not be running at full tilt all the time mentally.

Probably. But I'd be downvoting them for using that stupid expression.

Without reading... this thread has turned into a "blame the doctors" circle jerk.

Addicts and their sympathizers are the worst. It's not my fault!

You better hope and pray that your life is never affected by addiction. It is a disease that is physical, mental, and spiritual. If you don't believe that, I hope for your sake that you never come to believe it.

...yet is still caused by stupid decisions to "try" something and further caused by someone who doesn't have the willpower to stop.

none of us should be having unprotected sex

but I hear ya,, the OT is a funny bunch you can say something as a joke and get attacked,, say something cruel and mean spirited and get s

I always used to think those with addictions were just weak. I dont drink, never smoked, never did drugs, have the least addictive personality>
I even have left this board for 6 months at a time and honestly didn't miss it, would read the MSB but thats about it

but the human brain is a mysterious thing and I get how some need to self-medicate due to undiagnosed conditions and can accept there is a lot more that I dont understand compared to what I do

This.

Its not a disease....it is addiction. Calling it a disease is just creating an excuse for using.

Addiction can cause disease but it in itself is just what it is.....Addiction.

i have, or had an uncle that just passed away last year that i found out after i got clean, that struggled with crack cocaine.

though, both my mom's biological father and my dad's biological father are alcoholics, and i have had the same bottle of gray goose in my frige for half a year now so i don't know.
