Mine is a joke. Bunch of old people that if you are in their little group. You can’t do what ever you want. But go against them, they will do what ever they can to come after you. They also like to make rules up as they go. Literally add things in addition to the black and white restrictions of their opinion Just because. Have been part of lawsuits that they lost and have pissed a lot of people off. HOAs can have their points but these window lickers are def not admirable.

the worst is a house that has a 20 ft skeleton up year round that they just change the outfits for based on the season... was kinda amusing t hat first halloween/christmas but its been 5 fricking years

I laughed!

Seriously…that kind of frickery lowers property values big-time. If you really want to effect change, get on the board of your homeowners association. It will be a major pain in the arse, but if others think like you, it may be worthwhile

Imagine being so miserable in life that one complains about chalk on the playground. I despise neighborhood groups and nexdoor for this reason and stay away from.

It was so ridiculous, I was up there with my daughter when it got posted... absolutely miserable wench that was complaining. It's one of those newer communities that have built-in playgrounds and of course chalk is a childhood pastime.

Like I said, her post got trounced, thank goodness.

Not good. The only time I had an HOA I got fined for having a utility trailer in my yard for a few days. Someone complained.

At the same time there was a vacant property at the end of the block with the yard a mess. And a guy about 4-5 houses down had a car outside his garage covered on blocks for months.

I’m fine with the rules as long as we are all playing by all the rules.

Bunch of damn nosey old grumps in our hood. Regularly get hate mail for various small things. Most recently letter with a picture of a tree that sucks up water and is not allowed. Problem was, the picture was clearly not my property or my tree. Multiple follow ups - no reply. But keep sending me 'friendly reminder' letters. It's about to be on at the next board meeting. We have several retired granny's that walk the neighborhood looking for shite.

I looked into buying a beach condo a few years back. $800-1000 a month in HOA dues was in the ballpark from what I was seeing at several condo complexes in the Destin area. But you have to remember that with condos, the HOA is responsible for a lot more than suburburan neighborbood HOA.

Condo HOA covers all of the insurance and maintenance for the building exterior, common areas, and other amenities. Most of those beach condo HOAs had resort pools, fitness centers, and parking garages that the HOA dues covered.

I hope I'm that rich one day.

My neighborhood has a "covenant" that we can't have yard chickens.

HOAs are good until they are not. Lots of horror stories online. I have been lucky so far that the residents in my neighborhood are all respectful to each other and any infractions that would violate a HOA code in another area are quickly resolved by the homeowner without someone from a HOA banging on their door. Crossing my fingers that this never changes while we are here.

Explain to me like im a 5 yr old what do the HOA fees go to? What do they cover? And you have to pay them every month correct?

Mine keep the neighborhood looking nice…..which is the reason I bought here in the first place. It pisses me off to get a nasty gram….but it is always valid!

I have been on at least one HOA board pretty much continuously for nearly 20 years. 7 out of 10 times drama starts from a "nasty gram" which is 100% legitimate, it just shames the person, and they get reactionary.

Our HOA is still under developer control, so there's no one representing the residents on the board. Even after they told us a few years ago that we were going to have someone on the board. Still hasn't happened.

They randomly decided that they were going to start charging a fee for architectural reviews. They then pulled the files from all previously approved reviews and sent everyone a bill plus a fine for not paying. I still don't know how they didn't get sued for that one.
They wanted me to pay for a review to install lights that is on their approval list already and I used their preferred vendor. I argued that but they didn't care. it wasn't worth the $50 to fight them anymore on it.

They were caught trespassing on land being one section of the neighborhood and walking the fence line looking in peoples back yards to see what they could find.

I could go on for days about this HOA, they are a joke. One of the managers was caught using HOA funds on her amazon shopping spree. They tried to cover that one up and fired her immediately.

Sounds like you're in quite a pickle with your HOA.

Jokes aside, I've never had one... but sometimes wish I did in my small neighborhood. The horror stories give me pause, but in a tight neighborhood I do confess to craving some order.

Depends on the neighborhood for all of that. Dues can be once a year or monthly, that usually depends on how much they are. More expensive neighborhoods tend to be monthly.

As to what is covered:

water
electricity
green/community space maintenance/repair
street lights
gates if you have them
gated communities are responsible for road maintenance
insurance
often HOAs own the green/common spaces so there are property taxes
the list can be much longer or shorter, depending on the neighborhood

Road maintenance is probably the most expensive single capital line item for the HOA where my primary house is. We have just under 10 miles of road but it is offset because it was done over time as filings were opened. The last section we did was 3 summers ago and we did just over 1.5 miles and it was right at $220k. The biggest line item of all by far is the human security at our gates, that is huge.

The ones which I saw were corrupt POS groups.

Tyrants who made under the table deals in the organizations and several hired friends and family with HOA money.

I avoid these like the plague.

YMMV

In my old neighborhood, the woman across the street was the street captain and if anything was wrong - you got a letter.

Too many cars in the driveway, flowers didn’t match, lots of crazy things even the HOA said to ignore.

Then her son who lived with her was picked up for child pornography.

The letters stopped.

We have one but I don't believe it's terribly in your face and I know there are HOA's that are over the top and run by complete, dicks.

Our place is in the mountains so there's no grass to keep up with, it's rocks and pine trees but they do ask that we manage the "noxious weeds." (thistle, tobacco weed) and store your RV and busted cars somewhere tf else. I'm good with that.

HOA is either invisible or suddenly becomes the FBI because your trash can stayed out 14 extra minutes. No middle ground ??
