GoFundme is now looking into allegations that a South Jersey couple is withholding money from a homeless veteran, who shot to international fame after his good deed went viral - allegations that Action News has been investigating for months.

Video of Article

"Johnny Bobbitt gained worldwide attention when he used his last $20 to fill up the gas tank of stranded motorist Kate McClure.

McClure and her boyfriend Mark D'Amico started a GoFundMe campaign in return, promising that Bobbitt would have a home.

Bobbitt told the Philadelphia Inquirer that he can't use the $200,000 left out of the $400,000 that donors raised on GoFundMe, and he no longer has a camper or a car.

McClure said the couple did all they could to help Bobbitt. The couple and Bobbitt once had a warm relationship with Bobbitt, but now they may be headed to court, the report said.

"Giving him all that money, it's never going to happen. I'll burn it in front of him," he said, adding that giving an "addict" the money would be like "giving him a loaded gun."

Bobbitt admitted to the paper that the couple once gave him $25,000 and he spent it on giving it to relatives and friends, and some on drugs.

Bobbitt questions the couple's motives and fears they may have squandered the money. He also questions if the couple has the legal authority to deny him the funds.

"I think it might have been good intentions in the beginning, but with that amount of money, I think it became greed." Bobbitt said.

Bobbitt raised suspicions over how McClure, a receptionist, is now driving a new BMW."

I'd bet millions of dollars every year are earmarked for people, yet never gets there.

GoFundMe does nothing and I bet makes a killing. Anyone familiar with what percentage they get?

Sounds to me like they have good intentions and are trying to manage the cash to keep the guy from blowing it all.

GoFundMe takes 5 percent of donations, and payment processors take 2.9 percent

This is just one that has more publicity than others, but how many of these Go Fund Me accounts are actually going the same way as this one...?

Maybe, but if people donated under the assumption that the homeless man would receive the money, they have no right to dictate how he spends it. No matter how noble their intentions are.

BS, that money was collected for him not them, they have no right to deny it to him and it doesnt matter if he blows it all in one night on hookers and cocaine, its his money not theirs to dictate how its used.

yes but they are not his mommy and arent empowered to act like one.

the money was collected for "him" not to be put in a trust for him so they decide when and where he spends it

He has the right to money that was donated to him, yes.

That's not exactly his GoFundMe works. The people who start it have more control than you'd imagine.

That's outside of the discussion of who should have a right to the money.

it’s not really his rights.
it’s the people who donated the money that have rights. they have the right to say where their donated funds go.

if they donated it to him specifically, then the money needs to either go to him or back to the donors.

if it goes elsewhere, then the people responsible are guilty of theft.

Seems like they could set up a trust or something for him with certain conditions like regular drug testing and he could receive a monthly allowance.

I'd imagine the people who donated didn't want it to be spent on drugs either. Perhaps whatever is left can be refunded.

True, but when I give money to somebody out on the streets, I don't track what they did with my money. Once I give it away, it's gone (even though I know some will use it on alcohol or drugs). I just hope it helped in some way. If the guy never cleans up, do they just keep the $ and spend it? Very likely.
