I offered a supposedly homeless guy a newly bought cold delicious orange juice the other day, and he turned it down.

Where did you buy donuts to bring to the guys at Meche's? That place must be fantastic!

Homeless should not be allowed to have pets. They should be fined if the pet is not licensed. It should be taken away if no rabies tag. They likely do not pick up after it when it shits everywhere. It really is animal abuse for a dog to have to live with a homeless. They are not getting flea or heartworm medication or ever seen by a vet. These are not heartwarming stories of a hobo taking in a stray from the street. The dog is not likely getting 3 squares a day and is forced to live in the elements. Take away their dogs and move them along.

would you rather the city haul the dog to the incinerator? b/c that's the other option for the dog. I suppose there is a very slight chance that the dog is adopted, but it has a far better chance of being tossed in the incinerator with the other 300+ animals that get charred every month.

While it not ideal for the dog, i understand it. The dog is probably some random stray too just trying to survive. They probably benefit from pairing with a homeless person to help secure some type of survival. On the human side of the equation, im sure that is a lonely life. Most people are going to look at you with disdain and not talk to you. Im sure any reliable companionship is more than welcome. So i get it.

They use the dogs as a deterrent for law enforcement.

If you arrest one of them for vagrancy or loitering or something similar, now you also have to deal with the dog.

It’s also a deterrent to arrest as the cops don’t want to have to also deal with an animal in addition to a vagrant.

Yeah, some of them might have the dogs as an insurance against arrest, especially once you consider how the homeless guy getting arrested on even a minor charge would sometimes end up really harming the dog, and the police would likely be aware of this.

LINK

The dogs are usually kept in a temporary holding area after the owner gets arrested. But in some jurisdictions, they might move into the general dog pound population in just the period of time it takes the homeless person to get released on recognizance by a judge. (Which is the only way a homeless person can get released pre-trial, since they obviously won’t be able to afford to pay even a cheap monetary bail.)

Then the homeless person would be unable to afford to pay the $200 or so it takes to get the dog out of the pound. And at that point, the dog would be as likely as any other dog in the pound to eventually be euthanized.

HDC posts this board, he lost his beloved dog. Now he has Dindu Nuffin von Thundermittens.

Here is his dog, which as you know was winning the National dog photo contest linked here last year or the year before. I think the sponsors disqualified him.

In many places there are way too many stray animals. Quite frankly they are better off (in most cases) with the homeless person than alone.
