One reason starter homes dont really exist anymore is that people are getting married later and when they buy their first house they are around 32-35 years old. A 23 year old can get by with a 1200 square foot house but a 35 year old needs space for a family of 4-5 immediately. I live and work in DFW and a 2500 square foot house in a good area of town with good schools starts at around $650k. My girlfriend and I make okay money and can afford it but the thought of spending $75k per year on housing (mortgage, insurance, property tax) is tough to grasp

Considering the average US household has a family unit of 3.8, how much space do you need.
The average college grad dual income at 33 is over 170k. Should be able to afford a 400k house if they saved anything in the first 10 years of their career.

Not even close. It’s always funny reading this board as it’s highly populated with people from small town Louisiana. Go to a bigger city or metro and $200k won’t buy you a home in the ghetto.
Shoot, $200k won’t get you much if anything in Coleman, TX near our ranch and that town has a median household income of around $35k

$400k won’t get you very far in big metros. That puts you in a low quality home with a 1 hour commute to work and bad schools. Is that what both spouses worked hard, went to college, and slaved away for?

I bought my first one when I was around 26, but I was moving locations a lot in the military. Had I not been moving so much I probably would have bought one when I was 23.
