...my largest male outweighs both of yours together by 30lbs or so and is one of the few breeds capable of taking a wolf in a fight.

And if I was mad, he wouldn't stand a damned chance. The last time he growled over a bowl of pasta he got to see the world with his head penned to the ceiling.

Dogs make poor protectors and great companions.

That's why I own a lion and a chimp that knows kung fu.

The best thing a dog can do is bark and thus give you a heads up someone is trying to get in. The more it barks and the louder it barks the better. This may also may make the intruder rethink what he's doing.

I have guns, but most won't think about entering when they hear an 85 pound doberman going nuts on the other side of the door. Little do they know, he is a puss.

Especially topped with sausage, mushrooms, and xanax.

Geez, OP. My canine squad is early-detection only...you have kids? Is that why no firearms?

Admittedly, it would be most amusing to see an intruder stumbling around in the dark, juggling 8 pizza boxes and trying to call my dogs off in favor of a slice of pie. If someone can pull that off, hell, he can take my TV or laptop.

I'll take my Great Dane's bark over a Pit's bite all night long.

Damn, I'd take a slice of xanax-laced pizza.

Regarding guns, I've never owned one, but as I wrote, for the protection of me and my family, I'm convinced the threat posed by our two howling canine companions is sufficient to ward off bad guys. I'm entirely confident in my present home protection system.

I don't know what my 80 pound yellow lab would do, but he is territorial. He can at least distract the intruder while I get correct sight alignment and sight picture

My advice: don't ever take up B&E, I don't think you'd get very far in that profession.

Flashlights? Sure, to help the intruder find his way back to the street. No street lights here.

There is no such thing as a home defense system unless you, or armed guards are patrolling your house 24/7.

In college my 120lb Rottweiler lived with me. Hell of a watch dog that scared the shite out of everyone, and had a huge bark. Came home one day after class to the front door kicked in, shite missing, and that big POS locked in my room laying on the bed. Looking around the room I found 2 torn up bread bags.

Needless to say a thief that does it for a living will get around the dog, and don't really care too much about alarm systems either. They know they have some time with the alarm. A dog should only be depended on as an early warning system at best. Don't put the safety of yourself or family in the hands of a dog.

I have a pistol that looks like something out of modern warfare. Suppressor, reflex red dot sight, flashlight, long barrel, the whole nine yards.

If a burglar with a 9mm hi point can get the drop and shoot better, he deserves to win.

I have a 75-lb. lab-weimaraner mix and a 60-lb. shepherd-husky mix who bark their heads off when a stranger approaches our home.
I have a 110 lb weimaraner shepherd mix that everyone thinks is a large black lab.

We have an alarm system that came with the place but only use it if the dog are boarded and we are out of town. We also have a toddler, so no guns. Besides, the dog works in instances when the gun is useless, like when we are at work. Most property theft occurs during the day so a gun would be useless against that 5 days a week.
