Got a 100lbs Mastiff Mix and a 50lbs Pit mix. All I know is that the Mastiff is very protective and when he sees someone he doesn't like, nothing distracts him. Tried to give him food or anything to get him to stop, but he won't. Just barks and snarls. Pit would just follow the Mastiff and get defensive too. Both are great dogs and I've taken them tailgating. But I do know that if it was life or death, and my girlfriend was around, they'd save her before me haha. But I trust dogs for home defense. 2 are always better than 1.

maybe so, but if it comes to that, most armed intruders would flee after shooting the dog because the noise will draw attention. Besides unless you sleep with a loaded weapon under your pillow, an armed intruder in the middle of the night already has the advantage.

My dog would kill the intruder first then eat the food.

Dogs arent as dumb as you think. I once had a friend who my dog loved like a member of the family, but then that friend became an enemy (drugs). He tried to break into the house by sweet talking the dog while trying to undo the door chain (he didnt know I was witnessing it) and the dog that used to be one of his best buds almost bit his hand off.

Very true. My Mastiff hated a couple of guys at my old apartment complex. He would get defensive and just hated them and I could never figure it out. Until about a week later I saw them getting arrested at the complex... Dogs can tell a lot about a person

Currently have a Boerboel puppy. She will end up weighing 130 lbs with a huge skull and big bark and I still wouldn't trust her to do much more than act as a warning signal. Wonder how many times the OP's dogs have nipped at or been aggressive with folks who are new to their home? Because if they are friendly with new people entering their house, they will be useless (outside of alerting you) when it comes to actually stopping an intruder.
I've only owned one dog that id trust to defend a house and that was our old Brazilian Mastiff. Very protective. To the point where unless you came over regularly, you couldn't walk in on your own and you couldn't make eye contact or approach him. You had to sit and let him come up to you. Total pain in the arse and I'm not totally upset that the Boerboel won't end up like that. The Brazilian Mastiff did look pretty lazy/harmless though...

Most dogs are pets, as I'm sure your Rottweiler was. If a protective breed is trained to be a protector, then he'll eat an intruder to pieces. Anatolian Shepherds engage wolves and cheetahs that are hunting livestock to survive, I don't think they'd have a problem with a dindu with shite in his drawers

Point being, dogs can serve as a formidable and unwaivering line of defense if they are trained to do so.

I'll keep my Dogos. They have protected me in the past while hunting and never hesitated, but I would still never depend on them as my sole means of defense.

lol My FedEx guy peeks out of the truck to ask if mine are out. They're huge and they bark loudly.. He seems like a nice guy, but I still keep up the charade that they are blood-thirsty killers.

Have a french mastiff. If someone approaches the door he's there before they get close to it. Very good deterrent.

Yep. Dogs>Alarms but serve the same purpose. It's up to you to heed that alarm or bark and act accordingly.

OP, think about it. If you REALLY wanted to break in to a house that had dogs in it, don't you think you're smart enough to come up with a way to get around them? Like others have posted, really enticing food, laced with poison or other drugs takes the dogs out of the equation. As a father, what are you going to do if the bad guys take out your dogs, and you're just standing there with your dick in your hand?

Do some research. Buy a gun. Get training. Practice. Drill it in to your kids that "we have a gun in the house. It's loaded. You even think about getting close to it and I will beat two birthdays out of you. Seriously. I. Will. BEAT YOU."

Plus, I assume you love your dogs. Do you really want to risk THEM going up against an intruder and not have a way to defend them as well?

Dogs are awesome for warning you that shite's getting real. As a responsible father you need to be prepared to deal with that shite.

I have a 110 Weimaraner also and a Vizsla. The Weim bark sounds like a grizzly bear when someone approaches the door. The Vizsla sounds like a yippy dog when she starts barking.

If my wife was in danger they would fight til the death. If I was in danger they would probably go lie down on the sofa.

We might have two pistols.

I have a Doberman and I bring her with me to a lot of pet friendly places. 9 times out of 10, it is people of color who are deathly afraid of her, so much so that when we walk near them, they stop what they're doing and walk the other way.

I'm planning on buying a second Doberman very soon.
