My son joined the Army National Guard right out of high school. He got a $20K sign-on bonus, plus qualified for the GI bill that paid about 70% of his college tuition. He got called up and spent 10 months in a middle east desert. Now he's back in school and 1 and a half years away from graduating. Also his GI bill now pays for about 90% of school (after active duty). Between active duty/ combat pay and his sign-on bonus that he has not touched, he will graduate with zero debt, and about $50K in his pocket. Proud of him...

What does he say about the experience over seas?
My boy has signed a scholarship agreement to play football at Florida…I think it’s going to be more commitment than the military. They’re going to be in his shite for the next 5 years. He’ll be a better man for it though.

I teach Math, so I certainly romanticize a classical liberal arts education.
Making college degrees requisite to almost any white collar work waters down education quality, and forces kids to put themselves in a terrible hole just to get in the door economically. It's busted

My son was happy for the experience, but he does not want to make a career in the Army. He did not appreciate all of the inefficacies, red tape and the boredom of active duty base life. This probably had something to do with being in the desert (northern Egypt). He wants to start his own business.

There’s no way you got scholarships with a 2.something high school gpa
quote:Get a grip, boss. Do you think anyone cares about your high school GPA?
I would never share this in public
eta: i think i got a small scholarship as well idk, but i didn't really pay ole miss shite. Worked out well for me

In State tuition at ole miss is under $10k a year. I had a job throughout undergrad. Hilarious that you are this pressed. Did you pay $200k to get a bachelor's and are projecting or something? Pretty insufferable posts

No, I’m just not an idiot. But I didn’t have a 2.something GPA in high school either so this simple concept is clear to me

No, I’m just not an idiot.
Last post I'll direct at you, but if you think a hs gpa matters at all in any way past getting into undergrad, you are indeed an idiot. I knew I was going to Ole Miss by junior year and knew I would get in with no problems and stopped caring about homework at that point which tanked my grades my last 3 semesters. Nothing in my life changed at all because of it.

It’s just embarrassing that you couldn’t make even B’s in high school.

Makes sense, a nondumbass would still have above a 3.0 in high school

But boomers had it way harder

My son went to two years of community college and graduated instrument technician. He was working full time while he was in school and made 70k and will probably break 100k this year. He plans to learn how to program PLCs and will pretty much write his own paycheck.
4 year degrees are not required if you do some homework into what field to go to and work hard or just show up and pass a drug test.

I have a high school senior next year, and I don’t know what advice to give her.
My son will be a senior. He’s just not going to a high dollar school. He’s taking a plumbing course at a community college in Mississippi that gets him an associates degree. It will probably cost $20,000.He will walk out of school qualified to take the journeyman plumber test. USM offers a program that accepts the 60 hours of community college as full credits. 20 more classes gets him a bachelors for around $15,000 if he decides to do that. LSU-Shreveport has a $15,000 MBA program if he thinks he needs more education. His plan is to be a plumber.
I’d suggest nursing to any HS graduate but go the CC route.

College is only good if you need a specific degree to get a specific job such as a lawyer, doctor, accountant, architect, scientist, etc. Every soft major is a money grab by the academics.
Trade school is the way to go if you aren't into a professional career.

Think about it. You’re 19-20 years old making bank while all your friends are stuck in school racking up debt. Fast forward two decades and you’re collecting disability because you can no longer carry that 40lb bag of roofing shingles up a ladder.

Ridiculous take. No such thing as a useless degree.

All 3 of my kids lived at home during college and worked. I know it’s not the full college experience but who gives a crap. They graduated with zero debt. Also, their grandpa didn’t go to college. He was at Vietnam at 18 in an infantry unit fighting just as a comparison. I think they can survive at least a few years at home.
