Hollygrove residents oppose new community center over racial differences

You can't make this shite up LINK
And the quote of the article...
Outsiders are going above and beyond to help impoverished NOLA neighborhoods and they are still met with resistance. How the hell could anyone in a area like hollygrove fight against a community center being built that will help out kids? It's mind blowing
quote:
A suburban mega-church's plan to create a small community center in the Hollygrove-Dixon neighborhood has sparked racially charged opposition among the mostly black residents whose homes surround the proposed site. Celebration Church and its representatives are outsiders looking to impose their will on the neighborhood, a lawyer for opponents of the project told the City Planning Commission Tuesday (Jan. 12). "None of them look like the clients that I represent in this neighborhood," he said.
quote:
Representatives for the church, nearly all of whom were white, countered that they were merely engaging in the outreach efforts that the city requires for developers who need special permits. They insisted they were polite but were greeted with doors slammed in their face. The community center would occupy a 1,200 square-foot craftsman cottage that the church plans to expand to 2,200 square feet via an addition added to the building's rear. It would offer services and programming geared toward children, adults and seniors, church representatives said.
And the quote of the article...
quote:
"The idea that people who don't look like us want to invest in our neighborhood is bad is really troubling to me," said Commissioner Nolan Marshall III, who is black.

I think the man you are quoting is actually in favor of the center. He's saying that the idea being perceived as bad is troubling to him (or his English is straight terrible and I'm wrong.) All the other shite is ridiculous though

He is. He is wondering why his black people are acting the way they are.

Why would anyone down vote this? Damn racist.

They have the mentality that if they let the whites in they will gentrify them out. Remember the kid that was living down there doing work for his church? He was robbed and shot to death. Let them all live in their own poverty. They seem to enjoy it.

You can't help those who don't want to be helped. I suppose they'd rather sit in their dysfunctional, rotten neighborhoods that don't see investment outside of pay day loan centers and liquor stores.

They don't want to improve their lives. They would rather be slaves like their ancestors, except now it is to government assistance.

i just don't get it. Poor areas of NOLA bitch about quality of life but then fight plans for a community center. Ita just crazy to me that you say you are being mistreated by a white culture but then fight it when a group tries to come in to help.

Best thing that can happen to Hollygrove is for Xavier to expand and expand and expand and demolish that neighborhood down to the ground.

I would imagine a long arse time

They always interview the guys that claim they talk for the community (and don't even live there) at large that oppose things like this. Its almost never the actual residents that are against projects like the one presented here.
