Holes around the edges of my lawn - I live in the Northeast

Can anyone tell me what is causing these 1" holes all along the edge of my lawn (which drops off into woods). I live in the North East. Of course my next question is how to I stop it from happening? Thank you.

Down here it would be either crawfish or armadillos. I am not sure you have either up that way, though. I would guess some kind of mole or vole...
