I’ve know a few businesses that have furloughed without pay. HL isn’t alone, they just brought a lot of attention to themselves. As many have already stated, most employees are better off with the unemployment pay.

They are doing this to get employees to claim unemployment rather than use PTO. It sounds like the employees will still have their PTO if/when they reopen.
In the short term it saves Hobby Lobby money and in the long term it’s probably better for the employees, though they may not see it that way. Anyone who can be “made whole” by the state benefits + $600/week from feds is better off saving PTO until those extra benefits are no longer available, or they get officially “laid off” and paid out.
Many companies are doing the same thing. I think California is the only state that requires companies to allow employees to use PTO in a furlough.

You’re an idiot. PTO is not designed for the entire company to take at once. It’s a budgeted line item for hourly employees to have vacation they accrued. If they pay it all at once the whole ship sinks.
Furloughs are not bad. It means they can file for unemployment but the company still pays benefits and will employ them when the economy returns. It could have been completely layed off. But their job is still there and they still have benefits.

Sephora did full stop layoffs for their part time in-store staff and even that I’m fine with. First, they’ve been paying them for 2 weeks while they’ve been closed. Then, part of the lay-off includes a 3rd week severance pay.
These are employees who work like 2 shifts a week. That’s pretty damn good to get - yet a few were melting down over it.
I imagine they didn’t furlough because the uncertainty as to how many stores will actually reopen. Don’t want to be stuck placing those employees somewhere else if their stores close for good.
It blows my mind that someone who works 20 hours or less per week for minimum wage thinks they deserve to get paid by the company for sitting at home indefinitely.

If employees take another job during the furlough will they receive a check for the accrued PTO when Hobby Lobby reopens? If not, frick them.

Of course (if they find something better & formally resign). They would also get it if this transitions into a layoff.
In meantime they take full advantage of relief passed by Congress, keep same health insurance, and have HL pay employees' share of the premiums. If they reopen May 1st (that was up until date listed for now) they come back to job with same date of hire and remaining PTO to use.
This is only a story for some because its Hobby Lobby. Some get a hard on wanting to make their actions wrong.
