I thought I saw on the news the govt was releasing warehoused supplies from NIH like this to hospitals in need.
They did release a fraction of what the NY and WA requested and when they arrived the medical people were THRILLED to see that it was all expired stock.

I have one of these for when necessary.
*I already had it. Not because of this.

Sounds like terrible planning at all levels. No stockpiles, no plan for replenishing, and no real ideas moving forward.
Coronavirus snuck up on no one in the US. I know every hospital has entire office buildings of employees they pay to oversee and plan for such things as this. I know because I've seen them and I've sent them all plenty of my money.
Whatever is left of the healthcare system after this shitshow needs a major overhaul.

Guess where all those masks are made.......you guessed it, China.
Guess why: that's where U.S. corporations outsourced their production.

Yep. I bet they saved like 2 cents per mask.

You can thank Communist China for hoarding all the masks.

Health providers can't, and shouldn't, be expected to carry enough stock to manage a global pandemic. You want to bitch about lack of foresight and planning, there's only one place to look.

N-95s can be used for extended periods.
I recently read an article where someone wore one in a city with massive air pollution for 10 days and it lost less than 1% of it's effectiveness.
Spray it with a germicide every night and then re-wear it.

What about taking the mask off to eat? How about a drink of water or three during a 12 hour shift? As soon as that mask seal is broken, they're considered compromised. Asking personnel to limit themselves to even 2 masks a day is dangerous to both employees and patients....and you want them to get by on one? And reuse it for days?
FOH.

I know there's no leadership according to you and Orange Man Bad and all but:

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping the globe, President Donald Trump issued an executive order to increase the availability of personal respiratory devices for healthcare workers.
In a memorandum released by the White House on March 10, Trump declared that public health experts anticipate shortages in the supply of respirators available for use by healthcare workers as they seek to mitigate further transmission of coronavirus.
Trump continued to say that the Secretary of Health and Human Services is slated to take “all appropriate and necessary steps” to ensure respirators are provided for emergency use for healthcare personnel in healthcare facilities and elsewhere. The Secretary of Labor is also set to consider any other appropriate steps to increase availability.
The statement comes on the heels of reports that some U.S. hospitals are facing short supplies of N95 respirator masksfrom 3M (NYSE:MMM) as the global coronavirus outbreak ramps up, according to The New York Times. 3M is among several medtech companies that have been faced with supply-related challenges brought on by the coronavirus.

Do you see the problem here? I tried to help by highlighting it.

We’re wearing other surgical masks over our n95s so they can be reused with multiple patients. We’re already short handed at my hospital in Florida and we only have 7 suspected cases.
