Don't be scared, just do it.
ETA: It basically puts your computer in night mode, pretty handy if you are working at night or in a dimly lit room. Never knew it.

that's because we have a handy button on our mac keyboards that turn up or down the contrast on our screens...we don't need all these alt whatever keys...

I wish I knew of a master setting to disable all those stupid "Ease of Access" keyboard shortcuts without going into the Control Panel and individually disabling Narrator, Sticky Keys, Filter Keys, etc.
