Just saw a story on Today. Basically saying JD was mentored and taught everything he knows by a former slave (Uncle Nearest). Anybody know the true story or is this just revisionist history?

I have heard that story, but no idea if it's true. I've been to the distillery and from what I recall, they do mention his slave(though I don't think they call him a slave), so maybe there's some validity to it.

They should change the name to Uncle Nearest and put a picture of a black guy on the bottle.

That should make everyone happy.

I'm sure this will disgust the people with such high standards that regularly purchase Jack Daniels

The story I have heard is that Jack went to work for a local preacher/grocer/distiller named Dan Call when he (Jack) was a kid. Call's slave Nearest Green was in charge of the distilling operation, and he supposedly taught Jack everything he knew.

When Jack opened his own distillery, he apparently brought on several of Green's family to work for him.

Jack Daniels doesn’t matter to me. I don’t drink. The concern is the revision of history. If even the insignificant facts are changed, the meaningful facts will be as well. If I recall correctly from high school, the man’s Job in 1984 was to rewrite history.

But what if the history we knew was whitewashed and this story is actually the correct one? It's not uncommon in our history that accomplishments of blacks have been scrubbed from history.

There is a chance. The uncle nearest came about from an investigation that used oral history as their references. How many people hear stories of some incredible accomplishment achieved by their great grand pappy which is more folklore based upon anecdotal evidence and associations rather than fact?
